Similar to playing games, programming teaches you to think logically and systematically. It teaches you planning skills and problem solving skills. Programming a computer gives you power and control: a program will do exactly what you program it to do. About the Author
Annette Godtland is a computer programmer who worked at IBM for 20 years then Kingland Systems Corporation for 5 years. She now considers herself to be a hobby programmer. She particularly enjoys programming computer games and working with all forms of computer graphics. Many years ago, Annette created course materials and taught a beginning programming class for 4th through 6th grade students. She enjoyed it so much that she always wanted to try making her course into a book. She finally did it in her book: Do-It-Yourself Java Games: An Introduction to Java Computer Programming. This book is the first in a planned series of do-it-yourself Java programming books, intended for junior high to high school students as well as adults, as a means to explore an interest in computer programming. Annette compiled a detailed tutorial of all the tips, tools, and techniques she has learned for getting a program to market, and for selling almost anything on the Internet, in her first book, This Little Program Went to Market. Exciting Introduction to Java Programming

I have used this book and the companion book More Do-It-Yourself Java Games twice in a course teaching non computer science majors to program. The students started with Do-It-Yourself Java Games and proceeded on to More Do-It-Yourself Java Games. The students loved the books and learned far more than in other courses I have taught at this level. I highly recommend these books to anyone wanting to learn Java programming and to anyone wanting to get students excited about computer science.

This book, Do-It-Yourself Java Games, gives students an excellent background in Java programming. The games in this book are all text-based, but they are imaginative and fun. The students thoroughly enjoyed creating them. The tutorial approach worked extremely well in guiding the students along in learning programming. The students worked at their own pace with most progressing far into or completing the second book, which features games with Java Swing graphics and event-driven programming. I've never seen students get so excited by textbooks. I did virtually no teaching in the course. Instead, I worked one-on-one or in small group settings with students. During our four week January Term the course was scheduled to meet for two hours and forty-five minutes. Most students showed up fifteen to thirty minutes early and left thirty to forty-five minutes late.

A number of the students have actually gone on to become computer science majors. These students have proven to have an excellent background for more advanced courses.

I have taught introductory programming courses for many years. These are the best books I have ever used for getting students interested in and excited about computer programming. If someone wants to learn Java programming while having a lot of fun doing so, I strongly recommend Do-It-Yourself Java Games. To get into Java Swing graphics programming and have a lot of fun along the way, More Do-It-Yourself Java Games is a great way to go.

Very basic java skills

Pretty simple concepts such as data types and classes are explained so if you have any java experience this book won't help you much, but sine it's written from a game perspective it still offers a lot to newbie java nerds and some nice skills to extend if you are familiar with java. If you want to learn advanced game programming look for a different book though

Hands down, the best Java intro book ever!

Do-It-Yourself Java Games: An Introduction to Java Computer Programming by Annette Godtland is by far the best intro Java and computer programming book I have read! What makes this one so good? First, the author is obviously a natural teacher and knows how to simply and clearly convey concepts that beginners and experienced programmers need to understand. But don't be fooled, this is not your typical programming 101 book. Without falling into either the " I'll crack a bunch of corny jokes to make learning FUN for the readers" or "I'll explain how to write the 'Hello World' program in 10 different ways", DIY Java Games lets you create 16 different Java projects that actually teach you how to write Java and construct programs FROM SCRATCH. And unlike many of the programming books, ALL of these projects you create ACTUALLY WORK! For someone who has purchased dozens of Java and other programming books, I can testify that one of the most disheartening and discouraging things that happens is when you spend hours meticulously typing code exactly as the author tells you and then when you try to run your program, all you get are errors and then you have to spend hours more trying to debug exactly why it isn't working. Then, often you discover that it isn't that you mistyped something, it's that the version in the book doesn't work with the latest version of Java or Eclipse or some other mind-numbing, blood-boiling reason.

If you follow Annette's easy-to-follow instructions every project works, and that gives you a sense of accomplishment and progress, because you can see the programming concepts you are learning with each project come to life. And if you somehow mistype something or don't understand a concept, there are links in every project as you progress that take you to the completed code for that section of the project.

Like I said, I have purchased dozens of programming books, and while each has something that can be taken from it, on the whole they have been either too basic, too dense, too poorly written or edited, or just written by someone who really doesn't know HOW TO TEACH. Thanks to DIY Java Games by Annette Godtland I can finally say that after years of trying, I'm REALLY UNDERSTANDING the logic, syntax and structure of creating Java programs. I'm confident that if I continue to diligently practice the concepts I'm learning from Annette, I'll soon be able to confidently say, "Yes, I know how to write Java programs".

Integrated networking, information processing, sensing and actuation capabilities allow physical devices to operate in changing environments. This makes smart systems possible but also creates the need for a new 'systems science' that can lead to unprecedented capabilities. Tightly coupled cyber and physical systems that exhibit this level of integrated intelligence are sometimes referred to as cyber-physical systems (CPS). All CPS have computational processes that interact with physical components. These can be relatively simple (e.g., a heater, cutting machine) or comprise multiple components in complex assemblies (e.g., vehicles, aircraft systems, oil refineries). The computational and physical processes of such systems are tightly interconnected and coordinated to work together effectively, often with humans in the loop.

Emily Dickinson is a figure of intense contradictions: the hermit, the spinster, the frail woman in white who nonetheless wrote poems of almost painfully turbulent passion. For years, biographers have speculated about the male mentor who inspired Dickinson's work, naming intellectual figures like Thomas Wentworth Higginson and Samuel Bowles as possible candidates. As it turns out, however, they might have looked closer to home. For years, both before and after a painful break in their relationship, Dickinson wrote ardent letters to her friend (and eventual sister-in-law) Susan Huntington Dickinson. Highly significant grouping of letters between true peers

This collection of letters is essential to Dickinson studies and to anyone interested in the poet. Grouping Emily Dickinson's letters to her sister-in-law, Sue, who was also her best friend and only trusted editor, shows not only how close they were but also makes clear that they were intellectual peers. That is significant because so many of ED's peers did not understand her or did not recognize her importance as an intellectual and as a writer. Sue was fully appreciative of both and was able to engage in written conversation with ED about everything, including poetic advice. ED listened to advice from no one except Sue. The letters are printed as they appear on the written page without any editorial changes. This, too, is significant because it forces us to reread the letters--we have come to know the letters through the editorial work of T.H. Johnson and T. Ward, who regularized sentences and restructured paragraphs. Smith and Hart have wisely left the structure untouched so the effect for us is the same as it was for Sue all those years ago.
The editors are also co-editors of the Dickinson Electronic Archive, in which further evidence of Susan's intellect is available. Their work is just the beginning of a reassessment of Dickinson and her creative process but this work is important and this book is a must for anyone who claims to have an interest in Dickinson, no matter how slight.

Emily Dickinson would have loved email

This careful collection of amazing letters, and its informative introductions to each section, as well as its coda and notes, reinforces several things that fans of Dickinson likely already believe. Emily Dickinson's reputation was in many ways greatly distorted posthumously by her contemporary Mabel Loomis Todd, late-arriving dragon lady of the Dickinson menage (and eventual mistress of her brother Austin Dickinson, Susan's husband) and originator of "many of the fallacies that have since become Dickinson legend." (p.204) Emily Dickinson was capable of deep and durable friendship. She treasured her own company, and also that of a few close friends. She adored her brother's wife, Susan Huntington Dickinson, who lived next-door in Amherst. The feeling was mutual. They were attached to one another, and utterly loyal. There were no telephones then. Dickinson needed to 'talk' or at least - to write. Some of the letters - mere bits of writing - were on homely topics. I can guess with certainty that were they alive today, they would have thought nothing of communicating throughout the day via email. So we are all of us in good company.
My only mild gripe about this book is the use of the word "intimate" in the subtitle, and the unsubtle choice of the (chaste yet suggestive) photograph by Imogen Cunningham for the cover. This material probably doesn't need to be marketed that way. Dickinson devotees will read this book without the implied promise of sex, and those who don't read Dickinson will be disappointed if they are expecting heated-up correspondence, or in any way sexualized letters from Emily Dickinson to her best friend. These letters are passionate, sometimes playful, and sometimes pedestrian. One reads them for a window on the writer - who was "intimate" with life.
A thoroughly worthwhile read.

One of the best manuscript studies of ED ever

The best thing about this book is that it gives us Dickinson's poems to her best friend, Sue, in the form they actually appear on the page. For most people, seeing the manuscripts of her poems is something that will never happen so Smith and Hart do their best to give us an idea of what Sue would have seen when she opened the envelopes. The review from the reader in the desert southwest has not read this book as it was meant to be read--as another way of reading and seeing. Hart and Smith do not suggest that theirs is the only way to read the letters/poems, they suggest that there's another way to read them that has not been the tradtional way of reading. My graduate students loved this book, as do I, because it offers a fresh perspective. Few Dickinson books in the last 10 years have been truly original and different. Anyone with a true interest in Dickinson, not the passing interest some reviews here suggest, will read this book in conjunction with other Dickinson studies and will achieve her/his own perspective of the poet. Smith and Hart give us some wonderful ideas to ponder, whether or not we agree with them is not the point. The point is that we exercise our intellect and think.
