Don't Go Looking for the Fortune at the Base of the Pyramid; Co-Create It

There is a fortune at the Base of the Pyramid--but don't go to find it, go to co-create it. That’s the message Ted London delivers in this book, and it's exactly the right message.

It's been 15 minutes see CK Prahalad sent companies searching for the fortune. Unfortunately, companies’ efforts to tap these opportunities have yielded varied results. London affirms that the promise remains intact. The opportunity to develop sustainable, scalable impact enterprises still exists, but only with the people at the Base of the Pyramid. If corporate leaders needed a practical How-to-Guide, based on the breakthrough inquiry of early pioneers, London delivers just that in an understandable, systematic way.

London proposes a three cornerstone approach, moving beyond inspirational stories to distill them into both lessons learned and frameworks that provide a pathway for success and reduce risks. London encourages business leaders to embrace new business models that emphasize on-going innovation over execution, recommending that they assume the same responsibility for market creation as they do for developing their own enterprises. His “C-E-I” framework, to co-create, innovate, and embed, helps leaders to think through the phases discretely, while also keeping the end in mind. His distinction between ‘pilot’ and ‘project’ is particularly freeing, setting a clear expectation for an appropriately measured learning phase which is distinctive from the launch of an operating program.

London is not alone in challenging us to move beyond measuring input and output, but he provides discrete recommendations for measuring impact, which he characterizes as economic well-being as well as capability well-being and relationship well-being.

Interesting blend of theory and tools

Interesting book about the BoP that combines theory, real life experiences, and several tools to organice thinking around BoP enterprises and how to make them work. The framework is pretty comprehensive and I found the concept of mutual co-creation very pertinent and well-developed. It's a fun and easy read and an interesting resource to help you think strategically about how to do good and use business to leverage and scale your impact.

A great guide that helps to demystify the Commercial Modeling!

If you are dragging your feet or just afraid to dip your feet into the Commercial Modeling world, I highly recommend this book.
So don't count yourself out! Everyone on the planet is a "commercial model", but it will take this manual of sorts, to give you the foundation and understanding of what you can expect and what you will practically need to continue to do to get work. I am currently working on getting Commercial shots, preparing my make-up bag, and clothes for future opportunities. Having Aaron's book to turn to as reference has been invaluable. This is a smart investment.

Great Resource for Models at All Stages

How to Become a Successful Commercial Model is a valuable resource for models at all stages of their careers. It gives aspiring models valuable advice on breaking into the business and the realities of the job. It also gives working models fresh insight on how to grow professionally and expand their careers.

I've been a commercial print model for five years. I took Mr. Marcus' advice on self promotion. I really appreciated those tips because it was something I had never considered before. But since I started marketing and promoting myself, I've seen doors open in ways I never imagined.

The most marked departure from his former advice, he says, is a new skepticism about very frequent high-intensity exercise. That skepticism arises, however, from cases such as those that Cooper reports of people who were regular strenuous exercisers and yet came down with quickly fatal diseases. Accordingly, the exercise program he recommends here is lower-intensity. New Recommendations Supplant the Info in this Book

This book is good in its underlying theme -- take antioxidants b-carotene, vit C, vit E to counter free radical damage -- but, evidently, its specific recommendations are outdated. Two sets of antioxidant dosages are recommended, a small dose for "health and longevity" exercisers, and a large dose for "athletic" exercisers, where the dividing line between types of exercisers is 50 aerobics points per week. Dr Cooper's latest recommendations, which can be found at cooperwellness.com, change the small and large dosages, and the dividing line has been changed to 150 aerobics points per week.

Evidence not clear-cut as Cooper makes it out to be

This book discusses ways to reduce the free radical damage that is thought to lead cancer and heart disease. Cooper presents ways to do so through exercise, diet, and supplements. And it the supplements part that is the most controversial of this book.
Dr. Cooper was one of the first noted fitness experts to recommend people start taking high doses of the antioxidant vitamins beta-carotene (the precursor to vitamin A), vitamin C, and vitamin E, along with the mineral selenium. He recommends taking levels that are several times the RDA for these nutrients.
Cooper cites many scientific studies that show high does of these antioxidants reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. However, this book was originally published in 1994, and more recent studies have not given unqualified support to these earlier studies. In fact, more recent studies have been mixed.
Some studies do show that taking antioxidants reduce risk, but other studies show there is no effect. I summarize many of these studies in a chapter on supplements in my book "Creationist Diet: Nutrition and God-given Foods According to the Bible." My conclusion is that there is some evidence for the benefit of taking antioxidants, but it is not clear-cut as Cooper makes it out to be. There may or may not be any benefit to the practice.
Further clouding whether to take these supplements is the risk of side effects. Fortunately, Cooper does list possible side effects one might experience.
Another issue that Cooper does not address is the cost factor. Vitamin C is rather inexpensive and vitamin E and selenium moderately so, but beta-carotene tends to be rather expensive. And beta-carotene is the antioxidant with the least evidence supporting it.
Given the split evidence, I would say that if money is tight, one should spend their money on healthy food, not supplements. As for myself, I have tried taking antioxidants in the amounts Cooper recommends, but I ended up with some of the side effects he mentions. I even tried taking different brands and forms of each nutrient and still had problems. So I simply don't bother with them anymore and focus on eating a healthy diet instead.

For years, I've been a big fan and follower of Dr. Cooper'saerobic exercise program. Nevertheless, I'll advise caution beforeundertaking Dr. Cooper's prescription for anti-oxidantsupplements. Dr. Cooper's recommendations for Vitamins C and E and beta-carotene are remarkably similar to those criticized as being without scientific foundation by a recent (April, 2000) Institute of Medicine Report.

A must read for parents

Frank Furedi does a great job looking at the broader issue of fear and all the factors that contribute to a culture of fear. Parenting, politics, environment, social, neighbors, neighborhoods, crime, history, "evolution" are many of the factors that are looked at in making the arguement that misantropy is the issue at heart.

A great book for an individual to assess their own habits of risk and put those risk into prospective. Look at the facts, not hype.

CHECK FOR ALL PAGES IN YOUR BOOKS.

This book was listed as NEW when purchased and is missing pages 509-524 and now I can’t return it because I missed the 30 day return. Unfortunately it was not noticed right away because they had not gotten to that part of the book in class until just this week… Can’t study and now have a non-usable damaged book….

Possibly the Perfect Textbook

This book is beyond useful! I'm acing my class, and I plan on holding onto it for graduate school. There is a lot of information included in each chapter, but it isn't overwhelming. Tests for certain organisms are highlighted in their own sections. Somehow the authors managed to include nothing but helpful facts. No pointless fillers. No digging through a 50 page paragraph for one key topic. The organization is flawless.

If your professor is using a different textbook, you should consider purchasing this boo as a supplemental read.

A Must-Have for New College/University Professors ...

The first university at which I taught actively discouraged returning learners (or "continuing education students"). The school was sub-ivy and openly declared that it was not the appropriate school for older students (they preferred a homogenous age-base to ensure bonding). They deliberately made it impossible for older students to attend by instituting a mandatory dorming policy for the first two years of one's study. For my first ten years of teaching, I never had an adult learner. When I switched universities, it was a shock to see adults in my classes ... I admit, I was uncertain how to approach them. As it turns out, continuing learners are some of the most driven, self-motivated students on-campus (this, of course, is a generalization ... but it has also been the vast majority of my experience).

If one is new to higher education and feeling nervous about older learners, read this text. It is a "quick read" that provides insight on topics one may have never considered. For instance, as revealed in "Chapter Four: A Dozen Things You Need to Know About Adult Learners," many older students are in the classroom as a result of a crisis or developmental transition (34). This is crucial to recognize; especially, if you are feeling resentment, hostility, or resistance from a particular learner. In my case, I frequently encountered older learners whose position now required an advanced degree. They would be give a time-frame to earn that degree or forfeit their position. When the educator understands this, the anger and frustration becomes entirely understandably (and then one can offer that student sympathy and guidance).

Additionally, I love that this text genuinely engages the reader. At the end of each chapter are "Think About It" boxes.These boxes address the reader and offer both review questions and thought-provoking ones. And, I genuinely appreciate the "Further Reading" sections that occur after each chapter. ("Further Reading" crammed at the end of a text is always discouraging to me ... when it is chapter by chapter, I can focus on areas of deficiency or curiosity).

In addition to the broad issues involving returning learners, I found the more detailed studies most interesting. For instance, if one is a new educator (at the college/university level), one may have learned how chair arrangement can impact the classroom environment (maybe in a practicum or in a pedagogical theory class). Here, the text applies those arrangements to the adult learner. I also like the concept of bringing in snacks for your students. (Just be sure to do this consistently and not only around evaluation time).

If one is in his/her first few years of teaching, I think this can be a phenomenal source of information. And, its concise nature is encouraging ... one can read this in a weekend and gain a great deal of wisdom for life.

Some great tips, even for those of us who have been teaching for awhile

Although the sub-title of this book makes it clear that it's geared toward new teachers and I've been teaching at the college level for twenty-one years (including thirteen years at a two-year college, where most of my students are adult learners), I picked it up anyway as part of the Vine program since I'm always interested in picking up new ideas.

As Brockett explains in his introduction to the book, the intended audience is not just college instructors, but anyone who teaches adults -- whether that be in a corporate environment, a counseling session, or a tutoring situation.

This book is a slim little volume, but it packs a great deal of useful information into its pages. Throughout the book are also exercises called "Think about It," where you're asked, as a reader, to review your own skillsets or areas of expertise in order to be a better teacher.

I had been hoping that more research about how the adult brain works to process information would be included, especially since a lot of exciting, new research in this area has been unfolding the last several years. The chapter "Teaching Techniques" also felt like it could include a lot more information; for example, in this chapter, Brockett provides a table that lists various teaching strategies like Buzz Groups, Fishbowls, etc., but doesn't explain them at all.

Overall, though, this is a useful book, and I picked up a few new ideas to try out with my students. If you're looking for other books on teaching strategies for adult learners, I'd also recommend McKeachie's Teaching Tips: Strategies, Research, and Theory for College and University Teachers (11E), Discussion as a Way of Teaching: Tools and Techniques for Democratic Classrooms, and Student Engagement Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty. All three of those books provide in-depth discussions of ways to be a successful instructor in higher-ed classes, and all have been instrumental in my professional growth.

Small but meaty!

This book is small, but it is a little powerhouse!

Brockett begins by pointing out that almost everyone, somehow, teaches adults something, so his audience is not just the college instructor or basic adult education/GED teacher, but almost everyone, even someone like a museum docent.

After explaining this, Brockett then discusses the characteristics of effective teaching, highlighting the important points with mnemonic aids that carry throughout the book. He then discusses four important keys to effective teaching, how to create a good learning environment, even explaining why some learners may be resistant. Also, he briefly offers suggestions about the dilemmas and challenges teachers face. (Disruptive students aren’t as common in adult ed. as K-12, but what to do when it does happen? What should the teacher do if a student is obviously cheating? How formal or informal should a teacher be with the students? How much or how little should a teacher share personal views with the students?)

It is well-researched, with plentiful newer and seminal (“oldie-but-goodie”) resources. Each chapter has a list of resources, as well as the back matter. Brockett’s writing style impresses me as knowledgeable but informal, just as he claims to be as a teacher.

Even those like me who have spent the majority of their careers in adult education will have something to take away from reading this book, and new teachers will truly find it helpful.

A Profoundly Compassionate and Insightful Work

Captivating with an opening declaration `All of us seek to understand the meaning of life, and especially the meaning of our own lives.', Dr. Alan Eppel has written a compelling masterpiece on the human condition, interweaving attachment theory, psychoanalysis, art, neuroscience and philosophy.

Artistically struck by the image on the book cover, I noticed myself mesmerized as I gaze at the picture, appreciating the complexity, the elegance, the thoughtfulness and its rich multilayered meaning.

Front and center in Eppel's work is the life transforming importance of love and meaning in our lives. It resonates deeply with my belief that love as the most powerful healing force known to humanity. Beginning with attachment phenomena as primary in human nature, followed by a systematic exploration of series of maxim-like propositions of the human experience, and ending with attachment as strongest sense of meaning in human interaction, Eppel's enormous wisdom, knowledge across disciplines and wealth of clinical experience is evident throughout the work. The series of propositions is a stroke of genius and it makes me thirsting for more.

Sweet Sorrow is the exceptional kind of work that I wish I had the privilege to read as I began my psychotherapy training twenty years ago. It provides the reader with key concepts, explication that is free of jargon, introducing towering thinkers in the field for further studying and illustrating the phenomena with succinct case studies. Sweet Sorrow will be on my `must read' list as I teach my psychotherapy students and supervisees in Toronto, Hong Kong and Beijing.

I love this book

I love this book! It's loaded with gems of the most unexpected syntheses of theory, way past and present, art, poetry and literature. My favorite is a discussion of Marie Bonaparts work on the psychological exploration of the meaning of time and its relevance to today. He collapses 70 years into this concluding remark: I'm going to quote it because its so good:
"Finally, Bonaparte raises the question as to whether time is something that really exists external to man, or whether it is a cognitive framework that is imposed upon external reality in our brains.... Or is time awareness merely the expression of our own inner biological clocks, orchestrated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus?" p. 98

Speaking of time travel: The chapter on Meaning offers a riff that includes Herbert Marcuse and Deepak Chopra on the same page.

There is so much to enjoy about this book. You can pick it up anywhere at all and read something intriguing; and think: I never would have thought of it that way: I never would have put this and that together. This is just such a work of creativity!

Dr Eppel's beautifully written book is at the same time scholarly and yet compelling for a general audience. It is a rare gift to be able to assimilate the intricate theories that have been advanced to explain the complexities lying behind our deepest emotions, translate this synopsis into language that is accessible and understandable, and set this down gracefully on the printed page. Readers are fortunate that Dr Eppel has this talent. Oprah take notice!

About the Author
Paul Claudel (1868-1955) was the author of numerous plays including Le Pain dur and Le Soulier de satin, and several volumes of poetry, the most famous of which is Five Great Odes. James Lawler is a translator and scholar of modern French poetry, especially that of the Symbolists. Most recently he wrote "Poetry and Moral Dialectic: Baudelaire's "Secret Architecture.""

East Is East And Claudel Is Claudel

whenever a great writer or poet puts down his thoughts and observations concerning a country or region he has visited, he inevitably presents his admirers with a wealth of information about his creative processes. Even it is not intended, it opens up new portals for the reader to view his work.

I found this view of M. Claudel's commentary on the East particularly intriguing since although his poetry is not well thought of today, nor indeed in some quarters he, as a man, is erroneously held in disrepute by some, it does show that as an observer, his ability to pick out the incidentals to highlight the essentials is very unique. This is not a travelogue but a careful study of what a foreign cultural inspires in him or causes him to reflect of his own philosophy.

Well worth the time spent reading it.
