A wonderful jazz message !

John Ramsay is a drummer, recording artist, author, educator and a famous clinician ; John is featured with the Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers Big Band so he knows perfectly the great Art's drumming ; In addition to these recordings, John has been heavily involved in teaching at The Berklee College of Music in Boston where he has taught for the past twelve years. The book is divided in several parts : 1) - Timekeeping Licks : Coordination / Syncopation ; In this section, drummers will gain insight into how one of the greatest drummers kept time behind the soloists he accompanied ; It is also important to consult the recordings listed for all the examples to get the subtleties and nuances that are more difficult to notate. 2) - Timekeeping Transcriptions : In this section, drummers will be able to see and hear longer examples of Art's timekeeping style ; There are transcriptions from 1947 ( "Humph" ) to 1981 ( "Cheryl" ) so you can hear how Art's style grew and evolved over the years. 3) - Solo Licks : It is a catalogue of figures to be added to the drummer's vocabulary of solo ideas. 4) - Solo Transcriptions : The author strongly suggestes to consult the recordings. 5) - Heads : This are especially pocket notebooks the author kept during his tenure as road manager with Art Blakey and various editions of Jazz Messengers from 1980 to 1982. 6) - Interviews : A great deal of love and admiration for Art. - This book is wonderful, we all miss Art who love to swing and helped others to swing, living jazz music with intensity, unique, inimitable ... This book and CD is a must have especially for all jazz drummers and for all jazz musicians as well. In my estimation, "Jazz Messages," gives you a true glimpse into the essence of Blakey and what it was like for his sidemen to be propelled by one of the most creative forces in music ever.

I loved it. I was very excited to learn about angels. I believe I have encountered a couple in my life--probably my own angels to assigned to me. They were in a large man reaching down and grabbing me out o the path of a truck. An alley ran beside our house and I was running around the house edge and fell. A large delivery trunk was coming right there- I must have bee around 3 yrs. old. He carried me up to my house and gave me to my mother. She does not remember this but I do! The last remembered encounter, was about 9 years ago. I was in the process of having another hip revision and was in pain and could not been down very well to put air in my car tire. I was asking the Lord how am I going to be able to air my tires(one kept losing air). When I pulled up to the air hose meter, a young boy (about 14 or so) appeared and offered to help me. I did not see him come up to me. I was very surprised and thankful, I told him my problem. He walked around filling my tires with air. I thank him and offered him a couple dollars and he refused. (I still did not think angel). I insisted and told him to buy himself a soft drink. Told him how thankful I was and that I felt he was an answer to my prayer. I looked down to open my car door and he "just" disappeared. I looked every where around the gas station and could not see him and felt he could not have vanished just like that--then I thought "angel" and thanked God. I was so excited to read about the coming harvest--that it will be greater than Acts 2. and the exciting "Force" for the end time harvest. I am 83 years old. I feel I have more to be doing with this end time harvest. I am very excited. Thank you for this book too. While I seemed to be limited on physically. I am a person that prays and have been doing this for awhile. It does not take the physical aspect, I can pray. God bless and keep you all in His loving care and direction. Thank you Mr. Sheets, for being attentive to The Holy Spirit and writing this book. I tell other about your book.

I highly recommend this for the Believers who understand the Work of the Cross. This book is a quick read, lays the purpose Angels of God have been dispatched for those who Believe and the activation of them hearken to the Word of God. I liked this so much I also bought the E Book so I have that as I travel as well. My soft cover is highly highlighted and has some side notes as well.

A classic on the subject of copperplate

Not only is this book out of print but Dick Jackson is no longer with us. This book is a classic regarding the copperplate alphabet. It is written clearly with excellent examples of the letters. One of the secrets to the lettering is a light touch to the up strokes. The other is the down strokes - none of us who were fortunate to have taken one of his workshops will ever forget his voice - MASH ON IT - as we created the downstrokes with the pen. He always wanted to see a contrast to the thick/thin lines. This book is worth searching for.

Very precise instruction

This book contains extremely detailed and rigid instructions for undertaking Copperplate calligraphy. It does not represent "modern Copperplate", which has lots of swirls and flourishes. However, if you want to learn Copperplate, this book will get it done, if you follow the exercises and instruction. It's a very valuable addition to my library!

Required Reading for Programmers (and Everyone Else)

I have a lot to say about this book, primarily because it is one of the few books I've read that has been amazing in pretty much every way:

* Its purpose is clear and useful: how to manage your time better.
* The writing is thoughtful, pragmatic, and extremely captivating: the author does an excellent job conveying his thoughts to you in the text.
* The flow of the book is simple and straightforward.
* The illustrations in the book are fun, educational, and beautiful.
* The layout of the book is structured in a very intuitive way: each section covers various short topics, each about a page in length. This makes it very easy to flip through for later reference, and find information on specific topics.

If you're wondering whether or not to buy this book: do it now! I promise you will enjoy it, and the benefits greatly outweigh the cost.

This book teaches you the Pomodoro Technique--a simple time management technique that has been around since the 80s. The main points of the Pomodoro Technique can be summed up as follows:

* The human mind is awful at multitasking.
* When you are intensely focused on a single task, you work more effectively, and feel more productive.
* Procrastination stems from anxiety about the future.
* You are less likely to procrastinate if you know that you only need to do a small thing.
* A single Pomodoro is a 25 minute chunk of working time, followed by a break.
* By working on a single task for a 25 minute chunk of time, you are able to focus intensely on a single task and make a lot of progress.
* After a 25 minute chunk (a Pomodoro), you reward yourself with a short break.
* Before starting a Pomodoro, you analyze your responsibilities, and pick the most urgent thing that needs attention.
* When you work on your Pomodoro, you make a contract with yourself to intently focus on the task at hand, and nothing else.

Essentially: the Pomodoro technique is a simple time management technique that helps you stay productive, and relaxed. It helps combat stress by forcing your attention to a single thing at a time, which subsequently improves mood, productivity, and excitement.

This is an *awesome* book. It should be required reading for anyone who does any sort of work that requires extensive brainpower. Since reading this book, I've been practicing the Pomodoro technique almost every day, to great results:

- I feel much more relaxed while I'm working.
- I feel a greater sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.
- I know that I'm making progress on my projects.
- I'm able to really enjoy what I'm doing at a much higher level than I was before.

To me, the Pomodoro Technique *feels right*. It feels natural. It's not one of those things that you read about, and never implement because it is time consuming, confusing, or difficult: it is easy, and you will *want* to do it!

I highly recommend this book.

I'm a Fan of Pomodoro Technique, But Not of This Book

I read about the Pomodoro technique online, so I was interested in trying a book on it. I saw this one in my local bookstore and got it, and it was not an enjoyable experience at all.

There is just too much information in the book that is mildly interesting but tangential at best in relation to the Pomodoro Technique. Some of the information seemed marginally relevant, and I kept waiting for the author to tie it into the technique and he didn't. Also, the prose is very painful to get through. It feels like maybe an engineer would get more out of this dry reading experience.

I wanted to rate this higher because I'm a fan of the technique and the author seems like a nice, enthusiastic fellow, but I had to really force myself to finish the book. Later on I realized the actual creator of the Pomodoro Technique has a free downloadable PDF available on his website that explains the technique in a more concise and straightforward method. I downloaded that and read it and it was far more enjoyable and helpful to me.

Interesting Productivity Approach

The Pomodoro approach basically is perform tasks within a time-boxes with a timer enforcing the timebox. The basic approach suggests a 25 minute timebox with relaxing and retrospection outside of the time-boxes. It is a well written book that is easy to read with some lots of sketches that were watercolored by the author. There are also mindmaps of each chapter although they were not all that helpful to me. I have been convinced to try to the technique as an execution technique below a GTD task tracking system. There is a free pdf-book by the inventor of the technique which is also worth reading. This book contributes additional useful process to the method. Pragmatic Programmers (the publisher) has mobile versions of the book.

Simply the Best

I can't in this review hope to match the authority given by the professional grammarian Geoff Pullum in his favorable review of the book. But I can respond to some of the negative points brought up by other reviewers, especially complaints about this book "validing sloppy usage", which it absolutely does not do.

The key point is this: to understand the MWDEU, you have to approach the book as an fully rational adult capable of making your own decisions about what constitutes good or sloppy usage. Rest assured that the book will give you the entire history of a word, including every usage considered a "mistake" by other prescriptivist alternatives. But the evidence supplied in this book is unparalleled in any other quick reference you can find, and after supplying this voluminous information, the MWDEU will leave the final decision to you, with the implicit assumption that you are capable of using your own language judgment to come to whatever usage conclusions best suit your own unique writing style.

This is vastly different from the approach of other manuals, which speak with an authoritative tone reminiscent of your middle-school English teacher. But if you are working under strict deadlines and have little time to consult the evidence personally, then you will likely find the MWDEU frustrating. In this case, you might be better off choosing a more prescriptivist guide so that you can rely on the authority of others.

Just be aware that the MWDEU has put the most work into researching its topics, and thus has the best usage information of any book on the market. This means the reviewer who claimed: "The moral is that usage is a pesky, pedantic thing best ignored in favor of saying whatever feels good" is simply incorrect. The MWDEU does not believe usage is "pesky", else they wouldn't have written a usage book. The difference is that this book doesn't give empty opinions; it presents the actual evidence from notable writers and speakers, and it allows its readers to weigh the options themselves.

And when the evidence dictates, they do not fail to mention a strict preference, e.g. their entry on "contemptuous". If you read their detailed history of the word, you realize that 300-500 years ago "contemptible" and "contemptuous" did not have distinct meanings. They were used interchangeably by Shakespeare, for instance. But over the last couple hundred years, based on the need of speakers and writers to be clear, a distinction has been drawn between the two words, and regardless of the history, they conclude at the end: "We are therefore joining the ranks of the cautious in advising you to keep contemptible and contemptuous distinct". Such is their superbly professional method to reach solutions about usage issues.

For those of us who are no longer in school and tire quickly of pedantic lectures from overbearing instructors, this difference in tone is a welcome change, especially given the outright condescension found in so many other usage manuals. Perhaps it is not for everyone, but the MWDEU is indisputably the best researched and most accurate book out there, and for people willing to invest their own critical thinking skills, it simply has no substitute.

I love bread.

I love bread. It's soft texture and sweet or salty taste. I tried baking using my bread machine along with this cookbook and that's the first time I ever made a bread that's why I was really happy. This is absolutely the best bread machine cookbook. Every loaf that I have made so far has come out perfectly. I have never had bread from my bread machine rise so well and turn out so moist. I ordered one for a friend. I highly recommend it. I also like that it tells you the amount of fiber in the bread.

Kindle version impossible to read.

This review is by my son, who is a big fan of the Pooch Cafe comic, and pertains only to the way the Kindle version of this book is presented.

I have bought this book on Kindle and I must warn you the print in stupidly small. So if you are buying this to read on Kindle, don't bother. If you are buying this as a collectors item, then don't expect to be able to read it.

Pooch Cafe was recommended to me by Amazon.Com, I suppose because I enjoy FoxTrot, Calvin & Hobbes and the like. It's fresh and funny - definitely worth a look if you're hunting a new comic strip to fall in love with.
