Meh.
By @jasonk5322
This book is a little dated, and comes from an awkward perspective, since most of the contributors are from the UK. On the front of the book, a British professor is quoted, saying that this is a book that every student of American Studies should have on their shelf. I would disagree. Although the perspective lacks much of the preconceived and overused cliches that exist in many American classrooms, it also lacks a passion for America that it deserves. There were times I felt as though the writers were competing to see who could use the most polysyllabic words in one sentence. Isn't brevity the soul of wit? Tell that to the contributors of this book. The only one of them that seems to understand that is a woman, writing about women's issues in America. Her chapter was by far the best of the bunch. Personally, I'm happy to be finished reading it.

Using Econometrics review
By Boston Paul
I enjoyed the book. I've had just a couple of graduate level stats/forecasting classes and probably know just enough to be dangerous. This book was very straightforward and introduced me to a few regression topics that grad school missed and was a good refresher for things I'd learned but long-forgotten. If you're looking to improve your understanding of regression analysis and how its used but don't want to get into a Ph.D. level of explanation, I recommend this book.

"Neuropsychological Rehabilitation provides useful introductory material and backgroundinformation on various disorders, assessments, and rehabilitative interventions for adult andgeriatric populations...This book is essential for psychologists or clinical neuropsychologists who have a stronginterest in understanding the current medical aspects of neuropsychological rehabilitation."--PsycCRITIQUES

This volume disseminates knowledge about the most advanced practices and techniques in the rehabilitation of neuropsychological deficits, covering both specific neuropsychological domains and approaches in neurorehabilitation. It adheres to the philosophy that it is not enough to identify a deficit or diagnose a disease unless doing so helps to direct rehabilitation efforts to improve function. Intended to advance clinical skills, the book goes beyond surface diagnostic practice to foster rehabilitative efforts in response to residual deficits and disease.

The volume begins by addressing the foundations of neuropsychology in rehabilitation and discussing, in depth, domain-specific rehabilitation practices, with a focus on functioning. This is followed by a discussion of supplemental applications and practices that go beyond function-specific methodology including neuroimaging and pharmacological agents. Also covered is the role of system/environmental manipulation and transitioning strategies. The final section attends to those presentations/groupings most commonly seen in rehabilitation practice for which there is no prototypical form.

Key Features:

  • Presents in depth the most advanced clinical applications for neuropsychological rehabilitation
  • Covers neuropsychological rehabilitation in terms of specific cognitive domains (attention, language, memory) and approaches to and practices in neurorehabilitation (neuroimaging, vocational rehabilitation, pharmacological rehabilitation)

Wings on My Feet: Black Ulysses at the Wars, by Howard W. Odum

One of the few depictions of African Americans in World War I, Wings on My Feet (1929) follows the tale of Black Ulysses, John Wesley "Left Wing" Gordon, begun in Howard W. Odum’s Rainbow Round My Shoulder (IUP, 2006). On one level, the novel continues a symbolic journey of the African American spirit; on another, it tracks the experiences of one black soldier from draft to training, shipping out, landing, fighting, returning stateside, and reintegrating into society. The book also explores broader social issues of race, war, and prejudice. As the subtitle makes clear, it is the story not of one war but the various wars Black Ulysses has endured before, during, and after World War I.

Another winner for Hennig, et al
By Laurin M. Linson
Access 2010 Programmer's Reference is a well-written, well-thought-out, and very helpful book. It's another winner for the team of authors who wrote it.

Not only are the technical details of Access programming in-depth, complete and accurate, and exceptionally well-explained, the features and functions of Access that they are used to implement or supplement are thoroughly explained, too -- just so your memory will be refreshed on those with which you are already familiar and you can learn the ones that are new to this release of the Access product.

I have used Access since its Version 1.0, lead an Access user group, and have been honored by being recognized as a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional for the product. But I wouldn't willingly start an Access 2010 project that I knew would involve code without having this book close at hand. I'm happy to let these extremely knowledgeable authors "do some heavy lifting" for me in identifying new functions and features, and investing the time and energy to determine and document exactly how those functions and features actually work.

Index is not adequate for a reference book
By quietstorm
It's not a bad book. I read the entire book even though I was disappointed early on (see my gripe about the index later in the review). To be brutally honest there are some classics out there that are better, and I am using some of them. But they are getting dated and I wanted to learn some new things and particularly get a good feel for the new version of Access 2010.

The style of sample code and follow-along examples is different from book to book. I prefer verbose and well-illustrated examples. The examples in this book are not quite to my liking, but some of you may find you prefer it. I won't try to explain further because if you've read a number of books you already know how examples and sample code are handled quite differently. I should mention the style of examples in this book varys a bit from chapter to chapter.

This book is the product of several/many authors and contributors; different authors wrote different chapters. Some of the chapters deliver advanced concepts in a terse style. Some of you will have to reread things carefully before moving on. Again, some of you may prefer this. In my case, I'd rather have more illuminating explanations.

There no good "war stories" or anecdotes about crazy bugs or situations they've encountered and had to work through. By contrast, in the famous Access 2002 Developers Handbook (which you should all have or get right now) the authors are willing to share gripes about things like misspelled property names and weird wildcard conventions or the like.

If you're like me, these tales from the trenches and even a little humor really bring a book to life, and the closest this book gets is rah rah coverage of "new and exciting" features in Access 2010. This book could be brought to life by giving us some stories and some dirt.

I believe these guys have access to Microsoft sources they rely on. I believe this affects their coverage and they are reluctant to criticize and eager to cheerlead. But I want and need honest information about quirks and problems, and this book does not have it. An example is crashing the database and temporarily corrupting it if you write/edit too much VBA code in debug mode. If you Google "access crashes when opening vba" you will get the idea. It turns out you have to decompile the database (requires executing a command from the command prompt!). Until you learn this solution your database is hosed, which is horrifying if you just did some inspired and hard work since your last backup (you do have a backup I hope). And the experts recommend not editing VBA outside of design mode until this problem is addressed in a bug fix. Will you find anything about this in this book? No.

Another example is the quirky prompt to save design changes when you didn't make any. It happens when you open a form using the new navigation system (successor to switchboard) and then filter records. It also happens when you use the new "Allow Value List Edits" feature, and it probably happens in other situations. The author of the chapter on Forms mentions a fix in passing but expanded coverage of this would have been welcome. This quirk ruined my experience with the new Navigation Menu interface (the new replacement for the switchboard, not the navigator on the side which we all use extensively). I filter records a lot; if I opened a form from the new navigation interface and filtered, I get this incredibly annoying prompt asking if I want to save design changes. Not something you'd want your users to see, so I had to stop using that feature.

Something that some of you may need to be aware of: This book deals with relatively advanced topics like Class object programming, Windows API, and Windows registry, and it covers them before it deals with topics many of you may want to read about...like forms and reports. And the coverage of these is terse, meaning you have to pay attention and understand each sentence or paragraph before moving on or you will get lost. I didn't mind too much and I understand why they did it, but this coverage may cause some of you to lose interest. And I'd describe the coverage as advanced but shallow (too brief and limited). This was doubtless to limit the already formidable length, but it detracts nonetheless. I would have done away with some of the chapters and expanded others. The chapters are written by different people with different styles. The chapter (near the end) on SQL Server interfacing is really good.

My big gripe is that several times I have tried to look up something in the index and not found it.

Example? "Option Group" is not even in the index of this book! So I looked under "Controls" and not only did not find option group as a subheading there, but was shocked to find very little on controls either! This is supposed to be a programmer's REFERENCE book!

Another example? Filtering. There is almost nothing in the index. Probably because there is not much in the book about it. If you had no other sources, you'd think filtering is of minor importance. I can assure you, and so will others, that is far from the case. (And Microsoft has done a LOT of work improving and perfecting this functionality.)

One more example? Split form. They covered this nicely but did not have this in the index, not even as a sub heading under forms. I had to flip through lots of pages to find what I had remembered them covering.

My issues with the index is the main reason for giving the book three stars. It has happened to me several times. I should point out the index is long but on 3 or 4 occasions I could not find much if anything on a topic I was interested in. I just gave you 3 examples but it happened several more times. I bet this comment will annoy the hell out of whoever did the index, but I'm being honest. If they went to the trouble to make it 20 pages, they may as well add ten or twenty more pages next edition and get ALL the references to topics that exist in the book. Why? If you're like me, you often vaguely remember reading about something that you later realize may be useful and you want to find it without flipping endlessly. An exhaustively complete index is ESSENTIAL for bringing the book to life as a programmer's reference.

Actually though, I consider this book more of an advanced overview than a programmer's reference (I have to point out again that "Programmer's Reference" is the title of the book). I spent a couple weeks of my life reading it, learned some things, and now it will sit on the shelf. It will not be my go-to reference book. I hope the index will work when I try again, but it will not be my first source to try.

Like I said I read it all. But five stars like all these other reviews...sorry I can't do it.To end on a positive note, some of the side highlight notes are interesting and I have learned some new things from the book. One of the best things in the book comes at the VERY end, the very last appendix. Its called "Tips and Tricks." I almost missed it. Its buried behind endless awful coverage of DAO and object model stuff, etc. It would be a shame to miss this very good section.

Great book for beginners and seasoned developers
By Luiz C. C. Rocha
This is a very well written book.

At the same time, it's comprehensive and straight to the point: it covers almost all the possible topics about Access development, and on each topic it shows what is important to know, it does not waste reader's time. It explains why features are built this or that way, instead of only listing what the features are. In other words, it's a BOOK, not a MANUAL.

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned Access developer (new to Access 2010), you will find this book to be very valuable.

EASY TO READ... A GOOD INTRODUCTION TO INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS
By Mihailo
I am a student of political science, and in my case, I was studying for the subjects "International Institutions" and the "Politics of the European Union". For both subjects, this book has been a very useful source of information, to be complemented with other readings. This books presents an "easy to read" historical information about the developments of International Organisation since the years of the League of Nations. Its first chapters introduce the developments of the League and the United Nations (during and at the end of the Cold War), and the next chapters introduce the developments of the European Union until the Maastricht Treaty.

Good points about this book is that it is easy to read, not boring al all. It presents developments in a simplified way, and moves forward covering important aspect on the subject.

Bad points: it does not include recent developments... I would like to read, for example, about Kofi Annan's years in the UN, but the book was written while Boutros Boutros Gali was the UN's Secretary General.

Despite that, I recommend this book, because it covers the main aspects of international organisation, its easy to read, and will be very useful to precede further readings. The 4 stars relate only for its absence of more recent developments.

Clever and authoritative
By A Customer
Reviewed by Vladimir Matveyev in International Relations, Volume XIII, No 5, August 1997 -
Towards the end of this book the authors remark that `... the essential core of international organisation is not the various administrative buildings in New York, Brussels, Geneva and elsewhere which represent the relevant institution in the public mind, but the rules, regulations and agreed procedures for which the institutions have assumed responsibility. In this sense the main thrust of the international organisation is the development of "international regimes": sets of rules which aim to regulate some specific activity of international interest'. This is, perhaps, the principal feature of the authors' approach to the problem of the unprecedented growth of international organizations throughout the twentieth century. In other words, they are more interested in analysing their place and role in the international system than in describing the administrative and legal aspects of international diplomacy. Yet, they do not completely ignore the latter. Their brief but accurate accounts of the activities of all the Secretary-Generals in the history of the United Nations are clever and authoritative. Above all, they foresaw that Boutros Boutros-Ghali would not be re-elected and they give their reasoning for this. Mentioning, in particular, that Boutros-Ghali was especially active and proficient in developing and implementing machinery for resolving conflicts (e.g. setting up `interim offices' in a number of former Soviet republics), the authors point out that he was also trying to extend his authority beyond the limits provided for by the UN Charter. Consequently, he came into conflict with the Security Council.
While the number of international organizations has grown markedly, so too have the differences between them. They come in all shapes and forms: governmental and non-governmental, global and regional, military and economic, large and small, long-lived and brief. The authors' focus of attention, however, is on intergovernmental organizations and they concentrate on the most significant of those. The major part of the book deals with only two organizations - the United Nations (with the League of Nations also considered as the UN's predecessor) as a global organization and the European Community (later the European Union) as the most unique and advanced regional organization. Besides these, the authors briefly consider the history and functions of three of the most important regional organizations outside Europe - the Organization of American States, the Organization of African Unity and ASEAN. The last chapter considers several international regimes: those concerned with international economic order, the Law of the Sea, nuclear non-proliferation and human rights protection.
In their selection of subjects, as well as in portraying the long and complicated history of both the United Nations and the European Union, the authors strike a proper balance between breadth in some spheres and detail in others. In accordance with their interpretation of international organizations as nothing other than instruments of states' diplomacy, the authors trace the development of the League of Nations and of the United Nations strictly within the framework of international relations. This allows them to devote special chapters to the formative period of the UN, the Cold War and the American-led UN (1945-1960), the Third World UN (1960-1980) and lastly, the UN in Crisis and its Rejuvenation (1980-1994). With hindsight, it might have been better if the final UN chapter had been divided into two separate sections.
The United Nations, with all its former and current weaknesses, and, not least, with its almost endemic budget deficit, nevertheless enjoys an almost magnetic appeal for dozens of new countries. Most of these emerged from the break-up of the Soviet Empire. Between 1990 and 1995, 27 additional states joined the UN, bringing the total membership to 185. At the same time an unparalleled number of humanitarian disorders occurred which virtually cried out for UN intervention and the number of peacekeepers rose from 10,000 in 1992 to 78,000 in 1994. It was, however, becoming increasingly difficult to find enough militarily efficient troops who were acceptable to the parties involved in the conflict. There are other problems confronting the United Nations at the end of the century which are no less troublesome and controversial and yet, the authors conclude, countries value and need the United Nations. `Through it they can pursue their interests, conduct diplomacy, debate and cooperate - in achieving the purposes set out in Article 1 of the Charter. As such, it is likely to survive for a long time'.
The authors' account of the European Community is equally balanced and competent. Their emphasis on recent events, namely the Maastricht Treaty and the European Union, is justified by the very significance of these momentous developments in the process of European integration. The authors point particularly to two internal forces which were driving the Community towards further integration in the late 1980s - the Single European Act, `with its inbuilt dynamic which encouraged further development, and the Single Market Programme, which highlighted the absence of (and therefore the need for) accompanying monetary and social measures'. External factors, that is the events in Eastern Europe since 1988, contributed substantially to the further development of the Community. A climate was created in which even the quite ambitious development of the EC did not seem extraordinary. The creation of the European Union is the result of that momentum.
Commenting on the further enlargement of the European Union, which the authors regard as `almost certain', they suggest a number of possible drawbacks to the inclusion of countries whose political and economic structure is not, to put it mildly, compatible with the level of present EU members. `Some of the new members may not share the supranational aspirations of the EU's founding fathers but may have a preference for intergovernmental cooperation or be driven by economic ambitions'.
In conclusion, the authors stress the uniqueness of the EU which, being a curious mix of the supernational and intergovernmental, is largely and will continue to remain outside the behavioural norms of other international organizations. `Perhaps it is not an organization at all', sum up the authors, `but really is a superstate in the making'.
The book, supplied with a detailed bibliography and a list of the major international organizations, serves a two-fold purpose: it belongs equally on the desk of students of international relations and diplomacy as well as on the bookshelves of researchers and practitioners of multinational diplomacy.
The authors are from Birmingham and Keele Universities. They certainly know the needs of their students. Moreover, in the Preface to the book they take the opportunity to thank their students for many helpful comments. I would venture to suggest that the book might also be useful for students of institutions of higher learning outside Britain, including my own.

A Spy Trilogy For The Ages
By Richard Robins
In this era of NSA electronic snooping, the game goes on. In the 1970s, Le Carre fashioned the remarkable tale of a double agent in the British Intelligence Service aka MI6. This is not James Bond stuff, it's the real deal. The daily intel grind where nothing is as it seems (I'm borrowing from the text a bit).

After the 2nd World War, the Brits & Americans had to worry about the KGB in Soviet Russia. Le Carre takes us into the highest levels of spydome, Britain's "Circus" in London. The American CIA begins to wonder about "leaks" to the KGB. Turns out they were right. As a teaser, see the 2012 film "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" which I review separately.

Cutting to the chase, if you enjoy spy thrillers, you will want to read and own this trilogy. It will be with you for a long time.

A wonderful spy trilogy by the best fiction writer in the English language

Great Stories, Really Horrible Binding
By Stephen Mann
The three stories collected in this book are, to my mind, the most intriguing yet easy to read and follow of all the Le Carre stories. I am a child of the 70s so there is a resonance with the material - which takes place in that decade - for me.

"Tinker Tailor" is possibly the best story of its type I've ever read. Much better than the recent movie, though that did a creditable job of portraying the events in the book, and the other stories match it in style and content.

But this binding is horrible. So tight it is very difficult to keep the pages open at one's place. If you force the binding open you will rip the endpapers away from the cover. Ask me how I know this. >8o(

So three stars.
