From Publishers Weekly
Lucky Boyce flees to New York from Bombay after the breakup of her disastrous marriage to a glamorous but controlling husband in Indian author Jain's overstuffed novel. Lucky's lost her status, her self-confidence and her business; struggling to find a purpose in all this through yoga and meditation, she volunteers to teach yoga at the local prison. She soon runs into an old flame, now married but still in love with her, and an opportunity to turn a former business rival into an ally. As she moves toward enlightenment, Lucky's thwarted by ever more bizarre roadblocks: she is mugged, framed for murder, robbed, gets pregnant, ad infinitum, all interspersed with descriptions of visions and prophetic dreams, putting her somewhere between Job and Bridget Jones. Though Lucky herself is a fully imagined, flawed but endearing character, the constant reliance on luck to shape the plot combined with a disappointing ending make this a mediocre read at best. A Somewhat Entertaining Read
By P. Gray
I don't want to give anything away with regard to this book because I hate it when people do that, so I won't. I'll speak in sweeping generalizations instead.

This book was an entertaining read at times but I found it a bit too contrived for my taste (I'd already figured out the ending 50 pages into the book.) I found the character "Lucky" predictable, arrogant, dull and very self-centered. I found it difficult to care about her, I really did. I mean, here she was having what I consider a very charmed and wonderful life (particularly when compared to the lives of most other people)but all she seemed to do was whine and complain and wonder why it wasn't better. Don't get me wrong, she did experience genuinely difficult and challenging moments but I just couldn't figure out why she wasn't dancing around joyfully during the times between them. She never seemed to have a truly happy moment and I kept wondering, why?

There's a quote in this book that's used over and over again and is attributed to this book: "We are not human beings seeking a spiritual experience, but spiritual beings undergoing a human experience." This is not an original quote or concept. It is one that has been used throughout history by many spiritual philosophies, texts and leaders, such as "The Science of Mind" by Ernest Holmes, several writings and teachings of Deepak Chopra, Dr. Wayne Dyer and Don Miguel Ruiz just to name a few. It would have been nice for the author to give credit where credit is due even though this book is a work of fiction.

I was truly hoping that this book would be an undiscovered gem for me but I never connected with it. Oh well, better luck next time I suppose.

A must read for women of all ages!!!
By Mengzhu Wang
A friend of mine recommended this book to me and I bought it from Amazon. Having recently gotten out of a long term relationship myself I could completely relate to Lucky Boyce's character and her struggle to start life from scratch again. As you read the book u realize that even though the problems that Lucky's character faces are different from ones we face in our day to day lives but sum where sooner or later our inner demons catch up to us and then there is no choice but to face them head on. And that's exactly what Lucky does.....We all find some thing in our lives that helps us find our inner strength for Lucky Yoga gives her the calm and the peace required to face her fears. Personally for me meditation and yoga have been very therapeutic too and hence I loved this book. For those who are new to healing effects of yoga this book will definitely be an eye opener. Bottom line this book was money well spent for me and I would definitely recommend it to one and all. Hats off to Bapsy Jain for writing a book with such well defined characters and a gripping story that makes it difficult to put down. I recently read on Bapsy's website that she is working on a sequel to this book and I cannot wait to read it.

A very good read.
By Zem S.
A great book for all readers, despite that Penguin appears to target young women in particular. Lucky, the protagonist, grows from an ambitious young professional to a fully-mature woman. But the twists and turns and interesting characters she meets along way will keep any reader turning pages. A mystery? Absolutely. A coming-of-age novel? Sort of. A novel with a message? Yes. But above all, a page turner. A very entertaining book.

This book presents a realistic picture of current economic thought through an understanding of theory and the application of issues. It discusses concepts in economics and how they relate to real issues in life. It delves into economics by looking at Crime, Labor Markets, Drug Use, Population etc, using the "tools" of economics.

From the Author
Many students reading this text will be enrolled in their first class in economics. For many (indeed, perhaps for most), it will also be their last class in economics. Why? Not everyone wants to be an economist, business owner, banker, or any of the myriad careers for which the study of economics is essential. So what can a course in economics do besides provide a few credits for those on their way toward degrees in engineering, environmental resources, nursing, graphic design, education, or other disciplines? Frankly, for those willing to put forth the effort to understand the basics of the economic way of thinking, even one course in economics can do a lot. My goal in writing Introduction to Economics: Social Issues and Economic Thinking is to foster an understanding of the basic tools and core reasoning that underlie decision making and problem solving, and to teach students to apply this way of thinking to an array of social and personal issues. Although specific occupations may require particular skills, these particular skill sets necessarily change and evolve over time. The need for people who can think, learn, and solve problems does not change. In Social Issues and Economic Thinking, I emphasize these critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Introductory courses in economics are generally taught using either a principles of economics approach or an issues in economics approach. Based on my own teaching experiences using each pedagogical approach for several years, students tend to be more involved and enthusiastic about the material when taught using the issues-based approach. The issues approach is also more fun for the professor and has drawn more students into the economics major at my institution. In their investigations of the issues pedagogy, Grimes and Nelson (1998) conducted controlled experiments to examine learning outcomes in issues-based versus traditional principles of economics courses. They found no significant difference in learning outcomes between the two pedagogical approaches but higher rates of course completion for students in the issues-based course. My intent is that Social Issues and Economic Thinking will bring to the issues market a better integration of the issues-based pedagogy with the conceptual framework of social welfare economics. The toolkit chapters are essential to doing this, in particular the chapters Consumer Surplus, Producer Surplus, and Economic Efficiency (Chapter 3) and the Power and Limits of Markets (Chapter 8). These chapters are oft en overlooked (or completely excluded) as a means to provide an accessible conceptual framework for students to judge the tradeoff s associated with market interventions and other social policies. By fully illustrating the concepts of efficiency and social welfare and by highlighting that economic systems face tradeoff s between efficiency and equity and between security and liberty, these chapters provide students with a method for evaluating social problems and policy responses and the inherent tradeoff s they pose. Students should finish the text with an appreciation of the great power of markets to organize societies and with an appreciation for the times in which markets alone cannot yield optimal outcomes. I hope the text will be a "myth buster" for students, who oft en hold very nave black-and-white ideas about be-all and end-all policy responses on both the laissez-faire and government intervention ends of the spectrum.

Solid but not enchanting
By Holly L.
Newly returned to London from the American wild west, Adelaide Pyne possesses a strong paranormal skill for reading dreamprints and a dangerous lamp. In the midst of being kidnapped, she is rescued by the mysterious Griffin Winters, a notorious crime lord who claims that he will go mad unless Adelaide agrees to help him undo the curse his great grandfather wrought on him by working the lamp with him. Of course, Griffin possesses powerful abilities of his own which serve him well in his line of work.
The lamp in her keeping was invented by Griffin's mentally unstable ancestor who thought to enhance his paranormal abilities threefold, and also surpass his rival Sylvester Jones, but instead the lamp proved his undoing. The lamp is meanwhile being sought by a ruthless, highly placed member in the Arcane Society.
The Burning Lamp is the second book in a series called the Dream Light Trilogy, each book is written in the repsective style of Jayne Castle's pseudonymns. By Amanda Quick standards this story is definitely not up to her old standards. Her characters are pleasant, but not captivating. The personal history and details are there, but somehow they come across flat and not fully developed. The process of Adelaide and Griffin falling in love is nearly instantaneous with little challenge or growth required on either character's part. The barriers to their relationship were almost nil, and too easily overcome. The sense of danger is present, but not gripping. The plot is well trodden and fairly predictable. Several familiar characters from previous stories pop up in this one, but have little real impact on the story.
When I finished the book I felt somewhat dissappointed. Overall a pleasant story, but not overly memorable.

Great story but missing some of Quick's magic
By A Book a Day
I absolutely love Amanda Quick's arcane society novels and with the Burning Lamp, she finds a way to introduce uniqueness and novelty to the new characters, but overall, it doesn't quite have the magic, wit, and tension that makes her novels so great. The story follows a new bloodline in the Arcane mythos, that of Nicholas Winters, who was the arch enemy of Sylvester Jones centuries back when the two were obsessed with trying to enhance their own powers. In Nicholas Winter's attempts, he created a curse on his descendants for which madness is inevitable, unless they can find a woman to manipulate the powers of a device known as the Burning Lamp. One such woman is Adelaide Pyne.

After the early death of her parents, a terrified fifteen year old Adelaid is spirited away to a school for young orphans, only to find that said school is actually a brothel. A man by the name of Mr. Smith with dark powers has arranged to have Adelaide in some sort of perverse sexual ceremony that will enhance his abilities. Adelaide manages to escape, steals a strange artifact from Mr. Smith, and flees to America. Thirteen years later, after working in carnivals and sideshows, while making wise investments, an independant Adelaide senses she must come back to England, where she immediately takes up a cause to bring down as many brothels and help the poor young women take back their lives, teaching them helpful skills and creating new identities for them. In her efforts, she becomes the target of two major crime lords. One is the owner of the brothels and the other is Griffin Winters, descendant of Nicholas Winters.

After his 36th birthday, Griffin is showing signs that the legendary curse of madness is real and is tracking down both the lamp and Adelaide. His powers sense that she is the one who can manipulate the lamp and he arranges to meet with her and keep her out of danger until she can help him reverse the curse. To his good fortune, not only can she manipulate the powers of the Burning Lamp but she actually has the lamp in her posession. Adelaide agrees to help him reverse the madness which approaches and in doing so the two find themselves in a heated relationship while they run from the danger that's chasing after them from every angle.

The angle of a crime lord falling for a reformist is a new twist for Quick. The fact that the never married Adelaide is not a virgin and has in fact had several lovers is also unique for her stories. Weaving in Caleb and Lucinda Jones from the Perfect Poison to monitor and possibly kill our "hero" is certainly not expected, but even with these new elements to keep the story fresh, it lacks the tension and chemistry that are typical of her relationships. Everything falls into place and seems like a story by numbers. The danger doesn't feel dangerous. There's no emotion in their emotions, and the chemistry is not combustible. It's truly a good story but it's missing the magic, humor and tension between our two leads that somehow makes it a little off. Just a little too go with the flow.

4 stars compared to other authors/3 stars for Amanda Quick
By jhl
Like most Jayne Ann Krentz/Amanda Quick books, this is a well-written romance with intelligent characters and a strong sense of place. Like most Krentz/Quick books of the last 7-8 years, it is utterly predictable in plot and character types. Krentz really likes rough and cynical male leads who are transformed by their love for quick-witted, capable, idealistic female leads, and I have to say that aspect of her books still works for me (romance is fantasy, after all!). I also really like the way her characters create their own "families" by gathering together people who matter to them. But her plots have become tired retreads, her characters seem to be interchangeable from one book to the next, and the clever banter that used to bring the leads together has become somewhat mechanical.

This is by no means a bad read, but neither is it a book that you'll remember. Krentz used to write books like that (sigh).

Aphrodite's Island: The European Discovery of Tahiti, by Anne Salmond

Aphrodite's Island is a bold new account of the European discovery of Tahiti, the Pacific island of mythic status that has figured so powerfully in European imaginings about sexuality, the exotic, and the nobility or bestiality of “savages.” In this groundbreaking book, Anne Salmond takes readers to the center of the shared history to furnish rich insights into Tahitian perceptions of the visitors while illuminating the full extent of European fascination with Tahiti. As she discerns the impact and meaning of the European effect on the islands, she demonstrates how, during the early contact period, the mythologies of Europe and Tahiti intersected and became entwined. Drawing on Tahitian oral histories, European manuscripts and artworks, collections of Tahitian artifacts, and illustrated with contemporary sketches, paintings, and engravings from the voyages, Aphrodite's Island provides a vivid account of the Europeans' Tahitian adventures. At the same time, the book's compelling insights into Tahitian life significantly change the way we view the history of this small island during a period when it became a crossroads for Europe.

"This book offers a fresh history of early Tahiti, considerably richer than any published before, imaginative in its speculations around local cosmology and local meanings, but also precise in its reconstruction of the political relationships that evolved with the early visits of the British, French, and Spanish. Important and revelatory." —Nicholas Thomas, author of Cook: The Extraordinary Voyages of Captain James Cook

"The interpretive skills Salmond has brought to this project are truly remarkable, and she tells a complex and consequential story with clarity, lan, and insight." —Don Brenneis, author of Law and Empire in the Pacific: Fiji and Hawai'i

all you ever wanted to know and more...
By K. Kennedy
I picked up this book out of curiosity...knowing absolutely nothing about the exploration of the islands in the Pacific by European explorers in the 18th century. This book is incredibly well researched and full of lots of information, but is still very interesting and kept my attention most of the time. I assumed (correctly, it seems) that the explorers were chauvinistic and exploitative, but what I did not know is that some were actually caring and good human beings who treated the inhabitants as equals and tried to understand them and their cultures. This book taught me a great deal about this subject, and was well worth the time to read it.

good information, bad writing
By pondscum
The premise for this book is quite interesting: it presents a continuous history of Tahiti during the period following first European contact, with a lot of information on local customs, politics, and events that were missed or misunderstood by the Europeans. In reading the journals of the explorers, you only get the European view of things, which was very much influenced by European traditions of myth and political thought. Here you get the Polynesian viewpoint as well. I think Salmond did a lot of research here and generally conveyed things accurately, as far as I'm familiar with the original sources myself.

Some parts of the book are very heavy going because of all the Tahitian names are hard to keep straight, but my big complaint is that the text badly needs editing. There's a lot of repetitiveness in the text that is just sloppiness (mentioning the same trivial factoid 3 times in as many pages, or twice in the same paragraph). And is it really correct by Spanish naming conventions to refer to Jos de Anda y Varela as "y Varela"? I also thought that some chapters could have been really tightened up and made more readable by making a point and citing relevant incidents, rather than page after page of wandering chronological narrative.

This Book Is For You!
By SnackGirl23
If you are at all curious about Astrology, this book is for you. If you are a student of Astrology, this book is for you. If you get readings done and wish you understood what the heck your astrologer was talking about, this book is for you.

For most people, learning how complex Astrology is can be quite a surprise, and somewhat daunting. This Astrology Dictionary has a huge amount of information in it, but they have written it so that it is very easy to read, and all the information is incredibly accessible. Because it is truly a "dictionary", everything is alphabetical so even if you are like me and can get distracted easily by all the really interesting bits of information, you can't get too lost. Plus, they have taken the extra step to use simple icons at the end of each definition, so you can instantly see what areas of astrology that particular explanation relates to, such as signs, planets, birth charts, compatibility, etc. I never would have thought of doing that, but it's very cool and really helps!

The first thing you're going to do is read the definition of everything you know about on your own chart. Then you'll read about everything that is on your significant other's chart, and your kids charts, etc. The great thing is that even if looking up lots of different things, it's all easily found and understood. You may as well just get all the different color highlighters out now because you'll use them - one color for you, one color for each kid, etc. If you're like me, this is the book that, in a short period of time, will be full of highlighter colors, dog-eared pages, and notes in the margin.

I also find myself grabbing this book every time I am reading any other astrology book. If I need more information about something, or get confused reading some of my other books, this is the one I grab to quickly give me the information I need. It is the best reference book! Remember, back in the day, when we all had a Funk and Wagnall dictionary on our bookshelves? That doesn't happen much anymore, but this Astrology Dictionary definitely needs a spot on your bookshelf. I guarantee, it is the one you will keep reaching for time after time!

If You Want To Understand Astrology, Buy This Book!
By D. S. Murphy, MsD
"The Complete Idiot's Guide: Astrology Dictionary" is the most easily understandable book on Astrology I've ever read despite the fact that it covers some extremely complex concepts. This book is much more than a simple dictionary of astrological terminology; it could easily double as a fully comprehensive self-study course for any student of astrology, allowing the student to progress to an intermediate level of knowledge and create a solid foundation for moving on to advanced concepts. The "Astro Theme" symbols used in the book allow the reader to link up and correlate astrological concepts in a 3-dimensional fashion, facilitating a fast track to learning. And, for those who simply wish to understand their own charts, this book gives you everything you need in simple to understand language.

If I could only have one book on astrology, "The Complete Idiot's Guide: Astrology Dictionary" would be it.

Symposium (Oxford World's Classics), by Plato, Robin Waterfield

In his celebrated masterpiece, Symposium, Plato imagines a high-society dinner-party in Athens in 416 BC. The guests--including the comic poet Aristophanes and Plato's mentor Socrates--each deliver a short speech in praise of love. The sequence of dazzling speeches culminates in Socrates' famous account of the views of Diotima, a prophetess who taught him that love is our means of trying to attain goodness, and a brilliant sketch of Socrates himself by a drunken Alcibiades, the most popular and notorious Athenian of the time. Engaging the reader on every page, this new translation conveys the power, humor, and pathos of Plato's creation and is complemented by full explanatory notes and an illuminating introduction.

Review

"A brilliant translation that gives new life to a classic. The introduction alone is worth the price of the text. Waterfield brings grace and style to the Symposium, brushing away the dust that pollutes the inferior, dead translations of the past."--William McTaggart, Westminster College

"The translation is quite good, remaining faithful to the original while flowing smoothly for the modern reader."--Ancient Philosophy

"Waterfield's translation is scholarly, yet in touch with the ZEITGEIST. More accessible than its predecessors, students will benefit from the refreshingly new tone of the introduction and translation. The notes and the index of names also add a fresh level of usefulness and a measure of charm."--Elf S. Raymond, Sarah Lawrence College

"Great. Superb notes. Informative but not pedantic."--Professor John R. Lenz, Drew University

"[The] introductory material is lucid and well-chosen."--Bryn Mawr Classical Review

"I like full Intro., marginal ref. numbers, excellent notes, size, and comfortable binding."--Madonna R. Adams, Pace University

"Waterfield's editions in the World's Classics series are superlative. Lucidly translated, his notes of explanation are, additionally, useful both to novice and to scholar."--Verna V. Gehring, Hood College

Symposium in Greek
By J. C. Woods
There are three good commentaries I know of on the Symposium. There is Rosen's, whose virtue is scholarly depth. Allen's, which unlike Rosen's, is good as an introduction and for those who simply want to enjoy the Symposium without getting entangled in scholarship. Finally there is this one, whose primary virtue is as a commentary of the Greek. This book, unlike Allen's, contains no English translation. If you want to read Symposium in Greek and need help or if you want to look up various terms in Greek, this is the book for you. If, on the other hand, you don't read Greek, or are uninterested in Greek there is a high likelihood you will be disappointed by this book.

The Wit and Wisdom of Love
By mp
Plato's "Symposium" will always be read because there will always be people who question the nature of Love. Agathon's dinner party is the scene of a conversation between a small group of men, who go around the table offering their views on Love. What does Love mean to us to-day? Reading over the responses of the dinner-guests and their host, we find the same range of answers in Ancient Greece that we are likely to find now.
Phaedrus and Pausanias are utilitarians and materialists. Phaedrus looks at love between people and a proto-Burkean love for government and state. Pausanias complicates the argument, saying that there are two different kinds of love, one which is common and one which is heavenly - yet still oriented towards the real and the tangible. Eryximachus is a proto-Swedenborg, trying to reconcile or harmonize the two kinds of love.
The jewels of Plato's "Symposium" are Aristophanes and Socrates. Aristophanes gives us the profoundly moving depiction of Love as a fundamental human need, a desire for completion. For a writer of comedy, whose aim as an art form is forgiveness and acceptance, Aristophanes's explanation is no surprise, though its depth is amazing. While women are generally discounted throughout the "Symposium," not only does Socrates, as we might expect, completely astound his audience (both inside the book and out) with his progressively logical and ascendant view of Love, but he also does it through the voice of a woman, Diotima. When we realize that Socrates is a character in this fiction, and that his words originate in a woman, the egalitarianism and wisdom of Plato the author truly shines forth, like the absolute beauty he claims as the ultimate goal of Love.
Was Plato a feminist? I don't know. I do know that the "Symposium" is a tremendous book. I picked it up and did not stop reading it until I was finished. The style of the Penguin translation is smooth, with a lighthearted tone that can make you forget that you are reading philosophy. Plato's comedic masterpiece in the "Symposium" is the character of Alcibiades, who provides the work a fitting end. Get the "Symposium" and read it now. You cannot help but Love it...in a Platonic sort of way.

Cut Your Teeth On This One
By Captain Cook
A special mood is induced by reading Plato, the product of an elite society whose ideal was leisurely contemplation. Indeed, it is an activity that seems to clash at every point with our own unreflective society whose thought currency is minted in soundbites and advertising slogans. People are not encouraged to be philosophical nowadays, so it is mainly the resort of the antisocial and the willfully eccentric who are in this way enabled to look down on the 'crude, vulgar masses.' Who, reading a book of Plato's, hasn't felt something of this pleasure?
If there is one book by Plato that can be considered to have a more mainstream appeal then it must surely be "The Symposium." The subject of love is of interest to us all and worthy of investigation as behind this word, perhaps the most overstretched in our language, there are so many possible meanings.
With this book we are able to eavesdrop on an after dinner party conversation by some truly great minds. As always, Plato is happy to present more than one view. Of course, the shocking point for the mainstream modern reader is that most of the discussion concerns homosexual love, nevertheless much of what is said can also be applied to many heterosexual situations.
Among the participants presented with perhaps some semblance to their original characters, are the great Athenian comic playwright, Aristophanes, and, towards the end, the party is enlivened by the arrival of the controversial Alcibiades, possibly the most brilliant statesman and soldier of his generation. It is through him and his confession of attempted seduction that we learn a great many details about Plato's mentor, Socrates.
The translator, Christopher Gill, succeeds in presenting the chain of argument in a clear, lucid style, further supplemented by a fine, lengthy introduction and copious notes for those unfamiliar with late fifth century BC Greece.

From Publishers Weekly
Although we know that fire was discovered in prehistoric times, the candle as we know it did not exist until about 1200. As Patricia Telesco (A Charmed Life; Wicca 2000) avers in Exploring Candle Magick: Candle Spells, Charms, Rituals, and Divinations, candles have always had a ritualistic component, and because they have so long been part of everyday life, the idea of using them as amulets, charms and magical devices is an accessible one. Written expressly for those who believe in magic, her book examines the topic in full from making candles to using them ritualistically and even uncovers the relationship between candle magic and feng shui.

Exploring Candle Magick

I was not as impressed as I was with my other book called Candleburning Rituals by Marie Bruce that I bought. I like my Candleburning Rituals the best. It had alot of information in it. This book is not as easy as the Candleburnig Rituals is. I will be studying this one more but right now I am using the Candlburing Ritual book.

When Wiccans Write Books On Subjects They Haven't Quite Mastered
By Honest Reviewer
Exploring Candle Magick is pretty much a book geared toward Wiccans and their idea or version of candle burning magic. It is a rough basic guide. Practitioners who are already knowledgeable on candle workings will not take much from this book but may recognize several key errors or points of conflict with regard to the practices described in the book. On a positive note, the book would be good for a beginner and someone who has no knowledge or experience with working with candles. The negative aspects of the book include teachings that contradict established candle working lore, such as to reuse wax from candles used in spellwork (should not be done) and that one merely blows out the candles in between use (candles should be pinched out, to blow a candle out dissipates the energy). I personally was turned off by the book because it was dedicated solely to Wiccans and did not encompass other and older magical traditions from which Wiccans have borrowed heavily their concepts and practices of magic. The incantations, spells, and chants included in the book are infantile and borderline trite. I will end on a positive note as at least I did take away something interesting from the book, that one can use lemon water to cleanse candles. I thought that was interesting, but as far as actually adding that to my practice I would think it would cause the candles to become sticky. I may try it once though just to find out.

A Medical Teacher's Manual for Success: Five Simple Steps, by Helen M. Shields

Although most medical school faculty members are required to teach, the standard medical school curriculum doesn't tell them how to do it well. This book does.

An award-winning clinician-teacher, Helen M. Shields has spent her career training future doctors, researchers, and medical school instructors. Here she shares classroom-tested methods for developing, implementing, and evaluating effective curricula for medical students. Shields's five steps emphasize

• extensive behind-the-scenes preparation, with a focus on visualizing both one's own performance and the desired student feedback• clear and logical presentations that match the material being taught• controlled exploration of topics through prepared questions and management of group dynamics• reinforcement of important concepts throughout the teaching session• a five-minute summary of take-home points

Shields's easy-to-follow guide discusses what teachers should do―and what they should not do. She provides pertinent beginning-of-chapter questions, sample teaching materials, tips for last-minute assignments, and other pearls of wisdom. Shields also describes the methods of dynamic and effective instructors, offers a step-by-step approach to preparation and presentation, and relates proven ways to address a variety of expected and unexpected situations.

Innovative and practical, A Medical Teacher’s Manual for Success is an essential resource for medical school faculty members who want to teach well.

Review

A much-needed resource for medical school educator faculty. This book will be useful for many development programs now being implemented for both residents and faculty.

(Dr. Patricia Thomas, coeditor of Curriculum Development for Medical Education)

[A Medical Teacher's Manual for Success] reads well from cover to cover as a comprehensive, authoritative text on medical education, but it will also be useful as a reference book that we will return to in the future to brush up on old techniques or before engaging in a new activity such as creating a medical education portfolio or devising a new curriculum for medical students.

Dr. Shields' Strongest Credentials
By Augustus A White, III, MD, PhD
In my view, Dr. Helen Shields' strongest credentials for writing this book is that she has won more teaching awards than anyone on the entire Harvard Medical School faculty, I believe. Moreover, she has won THE prestigious faculty teaching award, that is, elected by the medical school faculty as an outstanding teacher on two occasions.

Even though I've been in academic medicine one way or the other; that is, as student or teacher for a total of no less than 56 years, I found this book delightfully informative and extremely useful.

The bibliography is well selected and quite comprehensive. The attention to detail and the specific valuable "cookbook" guidelines are inordinately useful. I took the book on vacation to look up a few specific items that I was curious about and I was attracted to other units of the book and before I realized it, I had read it in its entirety.

The practical advice, the thoughtful and often referenced recommendations and analyses are of tremendous value.

I believe it's valuable for students, as well as, young, middle, and senior people in the medical academic career track. It's also useful for anyone teaching in any medical setting.

I trust that others will gain as much from it as I have. I have purchased several copies to share with friends and colleagues involved with medical education.

Respectfully,

Augustus A. White, III, MD, PhD

One of the better med educ fac dev books I've purchased
By Ralph A. Gillies
I have read several medical teacher books either for my own development or in preparation for faculty development of colleagues. This book is a great balance of straight forward suggestions that can be readily applied (in classroom, rounds, morning report, conference presentation) and a succinct overview of the theory and research supporting various approaches (e.g., team based learning - how to do it and what kind of outcomes you can expect based on published studies).

While some sections or examples are more relevant to medical educators, I can see manual being very useful and acceptable to all health profession educators.

The chapters are quick reads so busy new faculty can get benefit in short time. And if they want more, the author often cites additional resources.

I have not reviewed books before but thought this one is worth others considering.
