This history traces the evolution of man's ideas concerning the generational continuities and changes of living organisms from the earliest times to the rediscovery of Mendel's fundamental laws, first brought to light in 1865 but neglected until the early 1900s. The dramatic story of the independent studies by Bateson (who coined the word "genetic"), De Vries, Correns, and Tschermak which finally led to public recognition of these laws is given in full detail.

Reviewing the first German edition of the book in Isis, Zirkle wrote that "The overall history of genetics falls easily and naturally into three periods. Recently, the first...has been covered excellently by Hans Stubbe."

Likewise, reviewing the second German edition (1965) for Science, the geneticist L. C. Dunn noted that "It is a sign of the widening interest in the origin of genetics that the first brief comprehensive account of its history before 1900 has already reached a second edition....

"The first edition was an excellent and succinct account of the work of Mendel and of his predecessors beginning with the first domesticators of plants and animals. The first chapters were devoted to ideas about reproduction and heredity as found in the works of the Greek and Roman writers of antiquity and of scientists and observers of the Middle Ages. The beginning of a new era in the 18th century was noted in the controversy concerning performation and epigenesis and especially in the botanical discoveries of the late 17th century and the 18th century (by Camerarius, Linnaeus, and K�lreuter). Some 40 pages (now expanded to 60) were devoted to the plant breeders and theorists of evolution in the 19th century, including Mendel, and were followed by an excellent chapter on the origin of variations and the mutation theory.... The last chapters, about a fifth of the text, were devoted to the great cytological discoveries of the 19th century, to Weismann and the germ plasm theory, to the rediscoveries of Mendel's laws, and to the first conceptions of a chromosome theory of heredity.

"The second edition is an improvement and expansion of the first. Forty pages have been added to the text, including a 12-page facsimile of Mendel's letter of 3 July 1870 to Carl von Naegeli (the holograph has not been published previously) and 115 titles added to the already extensive bibliography. Proper attention has now been paid to Karl Pearson's contributions (1900 to 1909), to the theory of Mendelian equilibrium, and to Fisher's critique of Mendel's theory....

"A valuable feature of the book is the brief biographical notices of most of the chief actors in the history of genetics up to and including the rediscoverers of 1900. Most of these notices are accompanied by portraits."

The present English translation is based on the second German edition, but it contains in turn a wealth of new material added by the author since the German publication.

About the Author

Fabio M. Soares

Fabio M. Soares is currently a PhD candidate at the Federal University of Para (Universidade Federal do Para - UFPA), in northern Brazil. He is very passionate about technology in almost all fields, and designs neural network solutions since 2004 and has applied this technique in several fields like telecommunications, industrial process control and modeling, hydroelectric power generation, financial applications, retail customer analysis and so on. His research topics cover supervised learning for data-driven modeling. As of 2017, he is currently carrying on research projects with chemical process modeling and control in the aluminum smelting and ferronickel processing industries, and has worked as a lecturer teaching subjects involving computer programming and artificial intelligence paradigms. As an active researcher, he has also a number of articles published in English language in many conferences and journals, including four book chapters.

Alan M. F. Souza

Alan M. F. Souza is computer engineer from Instituto de Estudos Superiores da Amazonia (IESAM). He holds a post-graduate degree in project management software and a master's degree in industrial processes (applied computing) from Universidade Federal do Para (UFPA). He has been working with neural networks since 2009 and has worked with Brazilian IT companies developing in Java, PHP, SQL, and other programming languages since 2006. He is passionate about programming and computational intelligence. Currently, he is a professor at Universidade da Amazonia (UNAMA) and a PhD candidate at UFPA.

HUGELY frustrating!!

Purchased the paper version...and omigosh, this thing is mind-numbingly frustrating!!

Most significantly, this is NOT a learn-by-doing book. Snippets of code are presented in the book, so you're not entering the stuff yourself -- just compiling what they've done. Speaking of which...be SURE to get the code from github, NOT via the link emailed from the publisher's web site, because THAT version of the code isn't even close to reflecting what's in the text. (Did I mention frustrating?)

Oh, you want an explanation of the code? No problem! The book promises (page 19) that "In appendix C, we present the reader the full documentation of the classes along with their UML class and package diagrams that will surely help as a reference for the book." EXCEPT that (1) appendix C does not appear in the book, and (2) the Preface describes the chapters and appendices, noting that the Appendices must be downloaded as a PDF...except that (a) appendix C isn't even mentioned here, and (b) not surprisingly, it is NOT part of the downloaded PDF. (Be careful with the really long name that's given -- no shortened URL here! -- as the 'W' must be lowercase.)

Taken together, not only was this book purchase a waste of both time and money, but there's not a chance I'll ever purchase another book from this publisher, who seems heck-bent on saving paper rather than, you know, teaching.

Basic Coaching

Helen Calder's "Grow Your Prophetic and Prayer Gifts" is a helpful, though limited introduction, for those who are beginning a personal journey into the exercise of prophetic gifts. Ms. Calder develops her teaching by tracing what she calls the "six phases" of gift and ministry growth: Beginning, Desiring, Emerging, Developing, Testing and Maturing. She offers practical wisdom and insights borne of personal experience at each stage.

The book is a helpful introduction to simple growth strategies. Particularly noteworthy is Ms. Calder's practical tone and avoidance of extremes and silliness. There are no claims here that with faith and perseverance anyone can launch a world-changing international ministry. That is refreshing. Ms. Calder offers practical advice such as deepening your relationship with God and remaining accountable to leadership. Yet, one will also not find theological depth in this work. While some might desire more, the title "Grow Your ... Gifts" seems to indicate that this was not the author's purpose.

I thought the earlier portions of the book were stronger than the later. For instance, Ms. Calder observes that there is a constellation of related gifts, including intercessory gifts, words of knowledge and wisdom, and prophecy. Advice and methods for growth in these areas are related; and Helen Calder can get you started well. Her descriptions of what emerging and developing gifts look like are often insightful; my understanding of these matters was enriched by her treatment. However, the later parts of the book seemed thinner to me by comparison. While the advice remains good, interest and impact would be improved by additional stories that flesh-out the tips and coaching she offers. And I would have appreciated more depth in the description of what these gift look like--and should not look like--in practice.

Overall, this is a helpful work for those beginning down this path. Ms. Calder has real wisdom to offer, and within the scope indicated by the title, she accomplishes her purpose well. Yet, this book will leave most wanting more. As a general introduction, Steve Thompson's "You May All Prophesy" is both a broader and deeper general introduction. Jack Deere's classics, "Surprised by the Voice of God" and "Suprised by the Power of the Spirit" combine theological sensitivity with the fascinating story of his personal journey. And Wayne Grudem's "The Gift of Prophecy in the New Testament and Today" is an indispensible foundational work for those desiring a more academic perspective. Yet none of these claim to be what "Grow Your Prophetic and Prayer Gifts" truly is: a brief and practical guide for growing toward maturity and skill in revelatory gifts. If this is what you seek, Ms. Calder's book is indeed a fine place to begin.

In this informative but ultimately disappointing account, Ungerleider (Mental Training for Peak Performance; Beyond Strength: Psychological Profiles of Olympic Athletes with Jackie Golding), a psychologist and journalist, traces the first major trial of former East German sports officials in 1998 and 1999. Under a strict directive from its highest political office, between the 1960s and the '80s the GDR gave steroids to more than 10,000 uninformed youngsters as part of its quest for dominance in worldwide sports events. Basing his reports on interviews with former athletes and officials, Ungerleider details the extensive health problems that the female athletes suffered as a result of the "vitamins" that they took, ranging from short-term concerns including raging libidos and unnatural hair-growth, to serious, long-term problems including depression, birth defects, heart failure and tumors. While poignant, these stories begin to repeat themselves. One of the more interesting revelations, however, is of the conflict some of the former Olympians feel: on the one hand is their patriotism and sense of obligation to the individuals who helped make them superior athletes; on the other is their sense of shame at the possibility of having won medals unfairly and the corresponding desire that the truth about the doping be told. Unfortunately, the main narrative of the trial fails to develop any momentum. Ungerleider does not examine the effects of the doping on East German society or on the Cold War; nor does he seriously address the implications of systemic sports drug use, even though, as the recent Tour de France scandal shows, they apply in the post-Communist world as well.

He successfully uses trial records and an athlete's testimony to trace the use of steroids in state-sponsored training programs. This intriguing book captures the reader's attention, but at times the narrative becomes melodramatic. Nevertheless, Ungerleider does an excellent job of showing the extreme steps that political leaders will take to achieve glory in sports and how young, na ve athletes are negatively affected in this process. Steroids and East Germany's Sports System

Steven Ungerleider has brought the story of East Germany's state organized sports doping to the US. In under 200 pages one can understand the dark side of anabolic steroid abuse used to glorify East Germany's politically driven win at all costs attitude. This account foucuses mainly on the DDR female swim program and the trials recently held in Berlin to bring justice to those who suffered severe side effects resulting from the steroids they were given while training for Olympic glory.
This book a narrative which makes the consequences of steroid abuse and the DDR regime understandable and personal to most any reader. This is not a scholarly text heavy with references though the information appears to be accurate and eagerly pursued. It is good that this story has made it to the USA so that individually our coaches and athletes can look at their own practices some of which are equally horrific. There is a price for gaining medals at any cost and this book describes just that. Ex-athletes who have died or suffered tumors, deformities, liver damage and had children with major birth defects...
Everyone should know of this system, the good, the bad and the ugly and we all should consider it as sport moves onward. This book will not give detailed insight into the DDR sport system as it focuses on the doping but one can certainly gain an appreciation for the harm that the doping has caused to athletes, athletes who suffered and still suffer due to the state program.
An excellent book that could be a great topic of classroom debate on sport ethics and training.

Great subject, good book which could have been better.

The subject is fascinating, and the author's research is impressive, as he has followed the trials in Germany closely. However, his organization, and narrative skills are poor, and his lack of detailed knowledge about Olympic swimming and competitive swimming training hurts his book. For example, while he accepts uncritically statements that no one could train the way that the victims he describes does without steroid use. I'm not sure that is true, and the details he provided are flawed enough that I don't think he does either. More background, and better context would have made a better book. Its too bad--this is quite a good book, but with a better editor and a co-author with more information about Olympic swimming, it could have been a great book. The occaisional suggestion that Germans are looking for excuses by claiming everyone does it, deserves more attention. While defensive, and the abuses are not universal, an author with more background could have identified specific examples of Americans and non-Germans whose performances are highly suspect, or proven to be false. Of course, the criminality of dosing children with steroids when they could not possibly have consented is outrageous when compared to voluntary participation by individuals over the age of consent--whatever that is for illegal drug use. However, the author also accepted uncritically the statements of regret by the victims--a more probing questioning might have found individuals whose competitive zeal would have or did compel them into using the steroids willingly--which is a more complicated tale of whether a teenager hoping for Olympic Glory, fame and fortune could have been willing participants, even if misguided and later regretful. Once again, I cannot tell if he asked those questions or considered those issues, although they would have improved the book if he had.

Faust's Gold: a must read

As a physician whose contact with competitive sports is limited to that of a spectator, I read this book with only a vague notion of the doping of athletes and the use of performance-enhancing drugs. I considered these activities as a minor and peripheral part of the Olympic games, believing that the IOC could and did expose them before they might influence the outcome.
"Faust's Gold" shattered my naivete about the glory of international sports competition and revealed an unremovable stain on my otherwise noble profession by a few despicable East German doctors. Perhaps other readers were aware; I wasn't, and I wish everyone else will read this book before watching the next Olympics.
I admire Ungerleider's ability to treat a politically and emotionally charged subject in a scholarly manner while keeping the reader riveted from beginning to end. A must read.
