A Fine Couples Book

I liked that this story deals with the kind of secrets we desperately hold close. Most of us are so concerned with hiding our secrets that we don't realize everyone - everyone - has secrets. Everyone has their kink. But we're so closely guarded with inhibitions that we never allow a crack in the armor of secrecy that could enrich our lives. What kind of kinks do our best friends have? They have them, but we're too afraid to ask.

In this book, the discovery of secrets is handled not only realistically, but proceeded with all due probability. Drake also handles the the touchy issue of different personalities not always agreeing on everything. Too many books have characters who just all seem to agree on everything. But reality is far different: people have different fantasies; people have different ideas on what is too far; people have insecurities that inhibit enjoyment. Drake touches on all this and brings the story together for a satisfying end, even if the title hints at the outcome.

The comments on politics had me laughing, and the hints about church had me nodding. Here's hoping the readers will take a little bit of inspiration from this story and maybe realize that their secrets aren't really all that bad. After all, in a hundred years, who is going to care about your secret?

Well worth the purchase if you love wife sharing fantasy! Good read for couples too!

Any husband who has fantasized about his wife having sex with another, this story will totally capture you. The HotWives Club is well written with very everyday like characters that any fun-loving couple can relate to since Drake makes them so realistic. This is the kind of story you want to read slowly and you don't want it to end. The story brings together characters found in other stories from this erotic author. How these characters become involved in each others sexual lives is something that could happen to most any couple. By the time you turn to the last page of the story you are so involved with the characters you want to know what will happen to them next.

The Last Alchemist by Erik Hamre is pure gold. Part mystery thriller and part study of wealth creation Hamre, the author, has ingeniously melded together a solid novel. David Dypsvik, a career student in Australia at Bond University, is coerced into finding a missing long lost billionaire, Yossar Devan. His professor, Grossman, is finishing writing a book on the ten principles of wealth. These same principles came from a series of lectures by Yossar who had held them for a few students at Oxford in London. These students all had become billionaires themselves. Professor Grossman makes David embark on quest to find Yossar and also learn about the ten principles. David is not the only one looking for Yossar. Like a breadcrumb trail, David starts a globetrotting hunt for clues with someone close to his heels and it becomes a deadly game.

Hamre makes this a fun ride with lots of twists and turns. Not only is the reader entertained, they are enlightened with real wealth building principles all throughout. I was so engrossed in the book that I flew through three quarters of it before I knew it. Will David find Yossar and the final wealth principle? Will his shocking family history be too much to bear? Who is telling the truth and can be trusted? You will have to read this golden nugget of a novel for yourself. I will also be reading Hamre's other novels. He has a new fan.

Erik Hamre started writing in 2013, after having spent more than a decade in the Banking and Finance industry in Norway and Australia. He has a Master in Business and Economics and a MBA.

Powerfully Exciting - More Than A Mystery Novel!

Professor Grossman’s mysterious request leaves student David Dypsvik perplexed. The professor has dropped a bombshell not only wanting David to market his book, but to find Yossar Devan a man who may or may not have existed. To sweeten the pot of David’s acceptance the professor suspends him for eight weeks, citing that his last paper was plagiarized. Without using footnotes David has no proof that he didn’t copy it, leaving the student in a quandary. “David hadn’t even had time to make up his mind of what to do. But life consisted of random events that lead to opportunities. In the past, he had never been brave enough to jump on any of them. Maybe it was time he changed his ways? ‘If I accept….When do I start if I accept?’ he asked.”

Erik is a masterful storyteller as he leads his readers through giant maze that consists of strange history, psychology, intrigue, mystery, suspense and lots of twists and turns. Remarkably, he had me captivated as well as spellbound from page one wondering what was the story behind the mysterious, missing character and can David’s journalism skills uncover the real story. Powerfully exciting there is more here than a typical mystery novel – one may even find a study in human nature and ourselves within its pages. Nevertheless, this is one unique novel from a gifted author that should not be missed.

A great book for fans of mystery

This is the story of David Dypsik. He is uninspired by his education.He doesn’t study. He would rather be at the beach and for his paper he did not use any academic sources. For this he is accused of plagiarism and this leads to a life-changing opportunity. His true calling seems to be journalism and this is the reason his professor recruits him for a job finding the reclusive Yossar Devon. I have always been interested in the principles of wealth. This vanishing character holds the answer to the question. The principles he launched over a few lectures at Oxfords University in 1973, just before he mysteriously disappeared are as relevant today as back then. The first is desire and I agree with his definition of wealth when your passive income surpasses your monthly expenses. He amassed a large amount of fortune and he’s called “the devil’s merchant.” It seems like a simple assignment but it turns into an adventure. I have discovered my passion, and even though this book is in the mystery genre I think we can learn a lot about history and ourselves reading the Last Alchemist.

I LOVED and ENJOYED this amazing thriller!

It shows that previous to writing this novel, Australian author Erik Hamre did quite a lot of research and a deep investigation, which makes this a unique and energetic book.
The story goes around main character David Dypsvik, a depressed, broke student who has no aspirations, until a professor at college gives him a secret mission he needs to accomplish- investigate about the disappearance of a wealthy man who went missing 40 years ago. David is really interested in this mission and will do anything possible to solve the mystery.
Only with what I wrote above you can already tell it's an interesting theme to read about, but The Last Alchemist is more than just a guy that went missing and someone wants to find out what happened- it takes you from the second world war to Ancient Egypt, and from the very first page to the very last one, you will remain speechless.
This amazing modern thriller with some spicy ingredients related to past history is a great reading which I highly recommend to everyone!

Cynthia “Roxy” Whitney was at the center of the downtown rock scene in New York from the time she arrived in 1974 at age 17. Along with her friend Anya Phillips, she helped create the bondage-inspired, extreme style that became famous as the “punk” look. Her social circle included, and brought together, many underground musicians and artists of mid-70s New York. She was also Johnny Ramone’s girlfriend during the first and most influential phase of the band’s career. She lives in Los Angeles. Emily XYZ is a writer, spoken-word performer, and Ramones fan. She is the author of The Emily XYZ Songbook: Poems for 2 Voices. Her work is featured in the PBS Television series The United States of Poetry, and in numerous anthologies, including Aloud: Voices from the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and Up is Up but So is Down: New York’s Downtown Literary Scene, 1974–1992.

Like a lower east side Almost Famous

I'm not a Ramones fan, but I found this story about the groupies behind the music to be fascinating. Like a lower east side Almost Famous. In my opinion, the girls in this book are far more interesting than the band members. Also loved the punk rock soap opera love triangle between Johnny and Cynthia and Linda. Told in the stream of consciousness of Cynthia Whitney's unique voice, this books feels as disjointed and chaotic as her mind and the situations must have been. A fun read even if you don't give a **** about the Ramones.

Truly atrocious editing and formatting make this book illegible

I'm really trying to enjoy this book, but it's becoming impossible after only the first handful of pages. The editing and formatting is TERRIBLE!! On the very first page I noticed that the letters "fi" were missing from words where they appeared together. OK, I am smart enough to work that one out. Then I noticed "fl" missing. Well, OK... Then, a couple pages later, a paragraph that doesn't make any sense in the context of the narrative's flow seems to begin mid-sentence and is followed by another seemingly incomplete paragraph that should probably have been part of two paragraphs prior. Annoyed, but undaunted, I endeavored to persevere. Then, finally, I came across this gem of a paragraph:

Proof that these are principles that will last forever!

This review is not for the cynics and others who hate America, (whether they live here or not): There are many of us who still believe in the 'American Dream'. Horatio Alger - I am addicted to his books! I can see why he sold so many in his day, because they are great stories! Some think of them as old but I don't - in fact the principles that he espouses are alive and well today and will be as long as people like Madoff stay in jail. These stories are delivered with a punch, thrills, and excitement. I'm reading them all, and enjoyed this one about a young boy without family, who has to face villains, thieves, con-men with only his honesty and honor. His persistence and hard work prevails, in a success story as powerful as only Alger can tell.

Alger will help you rethink your own way to success - he provides step-by-step ways that his hero moves forward, both practical and via a positive mindset or values. Penetrating and impactful as they are alive today as in is time. Good ideas are always valuable!

You will really enjoy it, and after, pass on this inspirational gift!

Cast Upon the Breakers is great Alger fun!

Our family has really gotten hooked on Horatio Alger. These wonderful stories are so powerful today in this economic climate. Back when they were written, there were no stimulus packages, no welfare as we know it, no food stamps, no income tax! Yet, today there is still such despair, that I feel it's very much the same...

So having said that, this book is great for two reasons:

1) its shows a method and mindset for success! It's not just a story, but the story explains the thinking and mindset of the hero who overcomes terrible odds to find success. The mindset explained is as powerful then as it is today.

2) while the story is fiction, the hero figures out a way to succeed - it of course depends on factor 1 above, his mindset, but, once we see how his mind works, he thinks of a plan to become successful - and what I like is the principles that are used are not like typical fiction, but of ways and means that anyone could use to become successful, good business ideas that are still on target for today!

This book is great for readers of any age, young or old, as long as you need a lift, and you want something powerful and good in your life, you will enjoy this great work by Alger!
It's all about Mindset!

His work has appeared in the anthologies Journeys Across The Rainbow: Inspirational Stories for the Human Race (Rainbow Pride Press) and America Now (Bedford/St. Martin's Press). Jason has a passion for urban music and spent a decade in the employ of Grammy-award-winning songwriter and soul diva Betty Wright. As an entertainment writer he has interviewed everyone from Motown legends Martha Reeves and Mary Wilson to Dionne Warwick and Patti LaBelle. A must-resd for any and all Phyllis Hyman fans.

I must first thank Mr. Michael for writing such an in-depth but sensitive biography of the late great Phyllis Hyman. Everything from her poverty-stricken childhood to her tumultous relationship with Arista Records' boss Clive Davis to her never-ending battle with chronic depression and bipolar disorder is covered. It's truly sad to think that someone as talented and gifted as Phyllis was unable to overcome her personal demons (despite really tring to). Sadly, we now know that (for all her beauty and talent) Phyllis was a tortured soul whose inner pain and insecurity led her to self-destructive behavior--unfortunately, those around her wouldn't (or couldn't) understand why. If you are a Phyllis Hyman fan you really should get this book but know that it IS heartbreaking as it is (to some degree) like watching a home video of her childhood up to her suicide at the age of 45. In retrospect, the real reason why Phyllis sounded so convincing on romantic ballads which dealt with pain, betrayal and lost love was because their lyrics mirrored her own experiences.

Don't be fooled by the superficial credibility that it is an authorized biography.

In short, it is not a very empathetic portrayal of Phyllis Hyman, and I think that it is slanderous. First, it must be said that writing a comprehensive biography about Phyllis Hyman would be a difficult task for the reasons that the author is unable to record her perspective and explanations of the events of her life. Thus, much of the content of the book is speculation.

Unfortunately, the author supplants the introspective and retrospective point of view of Phyllis with the symptomatology of bipolar Disorder and Depression, and commentary (or in other words, gossip) from her acquaintances and peers; some of whom seem to have very low estimations of her character and unsympathetic (sometimes harsh) opinions of her plight. Largely missing from this portrayal is any artistic, compassionate, imaginative or speculative representation of Phyllis Hyman's experience as herself: an American Black woman -who was born without sufficient security into a world that was and continually is abusive, greedy, racist, sexist, and violent -or in one word, inhumane. In place of any comprehensive, or relatable speculation about Phyllis' experience and its effects on her disposition and personality, the author mostly summates her life to alcoholism, drug abuse, salaciousness, and outrageous and outlandish fits. This egregious lifestyle is the attributed to her childhood -or bad parenting by the author, which is said to have contributed to her low self-esteem, mental illness, and her suspect character. Though it must be said that the author does give a general account of the music industry and its associates that Hyman encountered, and suggest factors that may have contributed to Hyman's commercial inviability. In addition, there are some accounts of her acts of kindness.

However, the author seems to marginalize and simplify Phyllis Hyman's experience of the world (and that of those around her), and gives an undeveloped description of the world in which she lived. For instances, Hiriam Bullock (PH Factor guitar player) mentions that a club owner made sexual advance at her and that after this she was motivated to leave Miami. The author gave no speculation as to what effect this may have had on her, and in general no contextual threads are drawn through the book, only personal ones -that mostly propose her inconsistencies and irregularity. This deficiency of context is not masked by the intimation that her life was sealed into a vacuum of fate, that the nature of her life and death was an inevitable result of her genetics and disposition.

Essentially, the author fails to make his book useful in general, but also to anyone that is invested in a comprehensive understanding of Phyllis Hyman, and her significance to culture and the human experience. I imagine that those with a genuine interest in Phyllis Hyman would expect that the book would reflect on how her experience and music as a testament to some redeemable aspect of her cultural influence, and to vividly illuminate to us some intricacies of our own experience. But, instead the relevance of Hyman's life and her work are relegated to a haphazard cautionary tale of innate mental illness (take your meds and love yourself), and thus we are given an oversimplified version of life.

It is my opinion that the book was poorly written: it is somewhat disorganized and repetitious, and failed to captivate my attention (after reading the first few chapters, I skim through it, driven by my curiosity alone), and it appeared not to be edited at all. In addition, it does not tell you anything that a google search would not reveal.

I think that the buy would be a waste of money and time. I would buy a CD in place of it. I paid $50 for the book and threw it in the trash. As one more out of circulation.
