Northwest Smith, by C.L. Moore

From C.L. Moore, the legendary pioneer of classic sci-fi, comes the collected adventures of the iconic space outlaw, Northwest Smith.

First published in Weird Tales in the early 1930s, C.L. Moore’s Northwest Smith stories, especially SHAMBLEAU, were hailed as some of the most imaginative and vivid science fiction stories ever to come out of the golden age of sci-fi. At a time when women were heavily underrepresented in the genre, C.L. Moore was among the first to gain critical and popular acclaim, drawing comparisons to contemporaries like H.P. Lovecraft and Fritz Leiber.

Northwest Smith, now recognized by many as the archetypal space smuggler and gunslinger, is an adventurer in the classic sense of the word, and these thirteen stories chronicle the bizarre dangers, interstellar wonders, and titillating romances that captured the imagination of a generation.

This book is a classic that all sci-fi fans should read.
By Amazon Customer
C. L. Moore garnered praise for her work in a time when women did not write science fiction. Her stories were powerful and poignant; her heroes and heroines were complex, well crafted individuals. She struck the perfect balance between adventure, science fiction, fantasy and mystery.
Northwest Smith is one of her more interesting heroes. He's an earthman who cannot return home and wanders the galaxy making the only living he can as a hired criminal. He's managed to become one of the best, and his employment continually sends him to the strangest most magical parts of the universe. Join in his adventures against the age old forces of the universe, which are often reminiscent of mythological tales.
This book is a classic that all sci-fi fans should read.

Fine Stories -- But Ration Them Out
By Randy Stafford
"Shambleau", the opening story of this series, was Moore's first sale and made her reputation. With a prelude that established a back story of ancient alien civilizations on Venus and Mars and a second space age of Man, it established a romantic setting for Moore to drop her outlaw hero Smith into. Mix in prose probably about as sensual and erotic as could be published in Weird Tales at the time and some explicit ancient Earth mythology, and a popular series was born.

And it's still a good, fine story. Unfortunately, it also established a formula pretty closely followed for eight out of the other nine stories in this book. So as not to spoil the enjoyment of the other stories, I won't spell out that formula, but I will say that what awed readers of Weird Tales as they were parceled out mostly from 1933-1936 will probably cloy your literary palate the way too much of a fine dessert will. Do not read these stories all at once.

Two other warnings are in order. First, this collection was first published as the limited hardcover Scarlet Dream in 1981. Second, I have found out that it seems to omit two Northwest Smith stories. You will find the whole series in the cunningly titled Northwest of Earth: The Complete Northwest Smith (Planet Stories Library).

Good Ole Fashioned Space Opera
By Paul Camp
Northwest Smith is an Earthman with a scarred face and pale eyes who dresses in worn spaceman's leathers and who packs a blaster at his hip.* He is frequently accompanied by the rotund Venusian, Yarol. (C.L. Moore states that his name was an anagram of her favorite model of typewriter.) Both are outlaws, frequently hunted by the Space Patrol. And both have met their share of exotic and deadly aliens around the solar system.

_Northwest Smith_ (1981) is an assemblage of nine N.S. novelettes and one vignette by C.L. Moore. The full length adventures were published in _Weird Tales_ between 1933 and 1936. The vignette, "Song in a Minor Key," is from _Fantastic Universe_ in 1957. It is Smith's reflections about how he left his girl friend and columned house for a life of crime. It is the least of the stories in the book, but not a bad epilogue.

"Shambleau" was Moore's first published story and Smith's first adventure. Smith rescues a female alien from a bloodthirsty mob. The alien proves to be seductive, gorgonish, and vampish. Smith almost meets his match. The story created a sensation among readers of _Weird Tales_, with its rounded characters and sensuous scenes.

"Shambleau" set the pattern of a blend of space opera and myth. Moore did not blatently repeat plots-- she was too good a writer for that-- but she did reuse the formula in her later stories. "Black Thirst" recounts a dangerous assignation between Smith and an aristocratic Minga maid in a Venusian palace. "The Tree of Life" depicts how Smith escapes from the Patrol only to fall into the clutches of a siren-like monster. "Scarlet Dream" opens with a scarf that sells just a little bit _too_ easily at a Martian market. In "Dust of Gods," Smith and Yarol go on a quest in Martian caverns-- and find more than they bargained for. In "Lost Paradise," we learn that strange races and dark secrets may be found in the parapets of New York City. In "Julhi," Smith falls into the hands of a cyclopean, serpentine witch. In "The Cold Gray God," a lovely Venusian Woman with a Past hires Smith to "recover" an object from a Spaceman's Rest. But things quickly become more complicated. And in "Yvala," N.S. and Yarol cross paths with a Circe-like enchantress.

Many of the stories feature "magic portals"-- doorways or entrances into caverns, palaces, or other dimensions. Smith is often told that there is no escape back through such portals. He usually finds a way nonetheless. But at the close of the story, the portal often collapses, separating one world from another. This is usually fortunate, since it isolates various unpleasant monsters from our own world.

Many of the stories have dreamlike or hypnotic sequences that add to the power of the tales. Here is Smith's night seduction by the _shambleau_:

The green eyes met his. He felt a perceptible shock, and a shudder rippled down his paralysed spine, leaving an icy numbness in its wake. He felt the goose-flesh rising. But that numbness and cold horror he scarcely realized, for the green eyes were locked in his in a long, long look that somehow presaged nameless things-- not altogether unpleasant things... (20)

And here is Smith locked in the hypnotic embrace of the Tree of Life:

By now the calling was so unbearably intense, so intolerably sweet that somehow in its very strength it set free a part of his dazed mind as it passed the limits of audible things and soared into ecstasies which no senses bound. (100)

Much of the action of "Scarlet Dream" occurs in a parallel dream world filled with scenes such as this:

There was no sunrise in that land. Lucid day brightened slowly over the breathing landscape, and grass and trees stirred with wakening awareness, rather horribly [horribly, because plants here are carnivorous] in the beauty of the morning. When Smith woke, he saw the girl coming up from the lake, shaking blue water from her orange hair. Blue droplets clung to the creaminess of her skin, and she was laughing and flushed from head to toe in the glowing dawn. (122)

And when Smith and Yarol are exposed to the dust of the gods, Smith sees this vision of the distant past:

He thought he saw mighty landscapes ringed by such mountains as none of today's world know... he thought he saw a whiter sun than has shone for eons, lighting a land where rivers thundered between green banks... thought he saw many moons parading across a purple night wherein shone constellations that haunted him with familiarity in the midst of their strangeness... saw a green star where red Mars should be, and a far pin-prick of white where the green point that is Earth hangs. Cities reeled past across the crystal darkness in shapes stranger than any that history records. (165)

All in all, old fashioned space opera at its best. And while that phrase might be trite, I daresay that it is accurate.

* Sound familiar? Think of him as the ancestor of Han Solo.

Generalized Linear Mixed Models: Modern Concepts, Methods and Applications (Chapman & Hall/CRC Texts in Statistical Science), by Walter W.

Generalized Linear Mixed Models: Modern Concepts, Methods and Applications presents an introduction to linear modeling using the generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) as an overarching conceptual framework. For readers new to linear models, the book helps them see the big picture. It shows how linear models fit with the rest of the core statistics curriculum and points out the major issues that statistical modelers must consider.

Along with describing common applications of GLMMs, the text introduces the essential theory and main methodology associated with linear models that accommodate random model effects and non-Gaussian data. Unlike traditional linear model textbooks that focus on normally distributed data, this one adopts a generalized mixed model approach throughout: data for linear modeling need not be normally distributed and effects may be fixed or random.

With numerous examples using SAS PROC GLIMMIX, this book is ideal for graduate students in statistics, statistics professionals seeking to update their knowledge, and researchers new to the generalized linear model thought process. It focuses on data-driven processes and provides context for extending traditional linear model thinking to generalized linear mixed modeling.

Review

"The book focuses on data-driven modeling and design processes, and it provides a context for extending traditional linear model thinking to generalised linear mixed modeling. This is a very sound text which teachers of any course on GLMMs should consider adopting."
―Erkki P. Liski, International Statistical Review (2013), 81

"Walter Stroup is a leading authority on GLMMs for applied statisticians, especially as implemented in the SAS programming environment. He offers a thorough, engaging, and opinionated treatment of the subject … I found the ‘fully general’ GLMM approach to modeling and design issues (Chapters 1 and 2) to be quite illuminating. … it is best to use this text in conjunction with SAS. Prospective readers without current access to SAS will be pleased to know that a reasonable level of access to SAS is now available at no cost to students and teachers on the web … If the reader prefers to work with GLMMs in the free, powerful, and state-of-the-art R environment, then he/she should supplement this text with some others that are built around R. I myself had good luck using Stroup’s text along with Julian Faraway’s two books Linear Models with R and Expanding the Linear Model with R, both published by CRC Press."
―Homer White, MAA Reviews, June 2013

"… for SAS users concerned with the analysis of trials, it is a very good resource. There are excellent discussions on many important concepts such as likelihood ratio testing and model selection criteria. PROC GLIMMIX is a powerful procedure implementing the rich family of GLMMs, and this book gives coverage to a wide variety of models with ample software illustration."
―Gillian Z. Heller, Australian & New Zealand Journal of Statistics, 2013

Outstanding, and not just for SAS users
By Dr Joseph A. Bulbulia
I am an R user, and resisted buying a book on GLMMs with examples in SAS. But I heard about this book on R's mixed model mailing list (no less than Doug Bates gave it a plug). I decided to give it a read - boy was I surprised! This book has helped me to understand GLMMs like no other.

Here's what's good:

1. The book starts with the view that linear regression is a special case of GLMM, and builds a simple, clear, and solid exposition from this assumption. The author's case is persuasive; I think students (and others) coming at *regression* for the first time will benefit from this approach.

2. The first part of the book (esp. chapters 2) develops GLMM in the context of experimental design, with application's to "nature's experiments" -- ecology, longitudinal designs, panel data, etc. The focus on developing a good and appropriate linear predictor with a clear appreciation of the peculiarities of each specific design has strongly improved my understanding of GLMMs (and more basically of *regression*). I especially appreciated Stroup's advice on sketching a plot plan for each design. There's also a plain and persuasive argument on the importance of distinguishing between units of observation and units of replication/randomization when constructing any regression model.

3. The text is written cleanly. Few words are wasted. Stroup's dry sense of humor makes the book a pleasure to read, and fun! No BS. You get the feeling you'd like this guy.

4. Even the SAS parts were helpful (hence the surprise!) This is because Stroup works through the issues of how the computations are performed in light of the specificities of a model. Again his point is that you need to understand how to construct a good and appropriate linear predictor. No receipts for that. Oddly then, I think the SAS parts are worth reading and understanding regardless of whatever platform you use.

Drawbacks:
1. As a newbie to GLMM, I found I had to re-read some parts, and I feel I could use another read through it. Those who are coming at GLMMs for the first time should expect to move slowly. Those who understand GLMMs (or think they do) but are not used to concentrating carefully about design questions, will also want to move slowly. No canned solutions.

A LOT of mistakes/ typos, but still helpful
By WSK
I purchased this book based on the positive reviews I read online, and I agree that this can be a very helpful stats and SAS textbook, but it lost points due to an abundance of errors and typos. Also, this is a very dense textbook, so it can be tricky if attempting to work through it on your own (rather than guided through it as part of a stats course).

It is still very helpful in describing the theory behind the model formation and selection. And I really like that the example SAS codes he uses in the book are available to download (for free) from the publishers website (http://www.crcpress.com/product/isbn/9781439815120).

The reason I'm only giving it 3/5 stars is because of how many mistakes and types are in the textbook (and in the SAS code available online, which as of now was last updated Oct 22, 2012), both which can seriously impair understanding and take a while to recognize/fix.

Some key examples are:
1) The data and output data set names give in the "Chapter_1_Table_1_1" SAS example file are incorrect. The code doesn't work as written; you have to fix the names for it to run correctly.
2) The SAS code provided for Example 3.5 (using data set 3.2) does not include the variables a or b. These need to be reconstructed based on the table at the bottom of page 85. However, following the outline of the table, the SAS output results for a and b are backwards. So to get the correct output as given in the book, the treatments need to be as follows:
treatment 0 = A0, B0; treatment 1 = A0, B1; treatment 2 = A1, B0; treatment 3 = A1, B1

These examples don't include the many typos in the actual text.

Also, since I wasn't as familiar with matrix algebra, I had to look online for a lot of help and clarification, especially early on.

But since this is forcing me to brush up on basic stats knowledge, as well as helping me understand more advanced concepts, I'm still giving it a conditional recommendation.

Explains the relationship between study design and analysis
By Chris Macintosh
I'm still working my way through the text but I give it a high recommendation. This is one of the first texts I've found to give a step by step description about matching study design with analysis plan. I appreciate the clear explanations and concrete examples. I lack an extensive preparation in statistics so there are some things I need to look up as I'm reading, but I appreciate the clear explanations of analyses with data that are not normally distributed. I also appreciate the periodic translation of terminology from other fields into what they're talking about (i.e. hierarchical linear modeling and social science). Thank you for making a challenging topic a bit easier to understand!

Random Access History
By William Holmes
For each day of the year, "365: Your Date With History" offers up one or two short essays and a brief list of other significant events that happened on that paticular day. Each well-written essay describes a significant event (a birth or a death, a battle or the passage of a law) and then explains what flowed from or caused the event. I've really had fun with this book. Each morning over breakfast, I read the entries for the day and learn a little bit more about history. The subject changes constantly, so I never get bored, and I can always leap ahead to see what happened on my birthday, or my wife's birthday, or our anniversary or whatever.

Since "365" was published in England in 2001, the publishers have issued several books in a similar spirit: 366: More Great Stories from History: More Great Stories from History for Every Day of the Year (Icon 366); 365: Tales of War: Great Stories from Military History for Every Day of the Year; and Best of Times, Worst of Times: 365 Great Stories from Modern History (Icon 365). The last of these picks up where "365" and "366" leave off, focusing on historical events since World War 2.

There are a number of similar books that are similar to the 365/366 series. All are more lightweight than "365," but they are still entertaining: Whitely, "On This Date . . ." (2002); ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY (1999); More On This Day in History; Donaldson & Donaldson, "The Book of Days" (1979) (eccentric and quirky); and What Time Of Day Was That?: History by the Minute (2001).

For a more encylopedic and accordingly less readable approach to the subject, try The History Channel's "Today in History: A Day by Day Review of World Events"--this book has a lot more entries than "365," but it lacks Marsh and Carrick's elegant little essays.

On the whole, I highly recommend "365" as a thoroughly enjoyable way of boning up on history, one day at a time.

From the Back Cover

Psychoprosthetics is the study of the psychological aspects of prosthetic use and of rehabilitative processes in those conditions that require the use of prosthetic devices. For people with limb loss, the fitting of a prosthesis can give rise to a variety of issues from functional rehabilitation to quality of life, well-being, participation in society and cosmetic satisfaction. As prosthetic technology continues to become more sophisticated and advanced, there is an onus on those who work with prosthetic users, to be aware of the impact of prosthetics on the ways in which people understand and construct their realities and their attempts to cope with and relate to them. However, despite the broad and increasing interest in psychosocial aspects of prosthetic use and rehabilitation, to date there has not been a complete volume on the topic – this book now addresses that need.

Psychoprosthetics brings together the most recent and exciting research and knowledge in this new field into one easily accessible volume. It contributes to a better understanding of the complex human dynamics involved in prosthetic use and provides an analysis of the practice, research and theory in the field of psychoprosthetics.

Written by some of the leading experts to the field, this informative and cutting-edge text will be of relevance to students, practitioners and researchers from a wide range of disciplines, including prosthetics and orthotics, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, rehabilitation medicine, engineering, nursing and psychology.

About the Author

Contributors will be well-known clinicians, practitioners, researchers and academics who work with prosthetics. The editors have considerable experience in reviewing, editing and publishing and are leaders in this field. They have published in all the leading relevant journals related to the area, have been invited to speak at key conferences and lead an active multidisciplinary group of researchers and clinicians interested in applying many aspects of psychology to prosthetic use, especially in regard to the rehabilitation of people with amputations.

All editors direct the Dublin Psychoprosthetics Group – a multidisciplinary group of researchers and clinicians interested in applying many and varied aspects of psychology to prosthetic use, especially in regard to the rehabilitation of people with amputations.: (See www.tcd.ie/psychoprosthetics).

Mr. China: A Memoir, by Tim Clissold

Mr. China tells the rollicking story of a young man who goes to China with the misguided notion that he will help bring the Chinese into the modern world, only to be schooled by the most resourceful and creative operators he would ever meet. Part memoir, part parable, Mr. China is one man's coming-of-age story where he learns to respect and admire the nation he sought to conquer.

From Publishers Weekly
A British businessman with a background in accounting and auditing, Clissold joined up with an entrepreneur in the early 1990s and set out to buy shares of Chinese firms and to work to make them more profitable. Within two years, Clissold's venture owned shares in 20 Chinese businesses, with 25,000 employees among them, but the story really centers on Clissold's encounters with the nation's "institutionalized confusion." Firing entrenched middle managers became a protracted process that led to factory riots and employees using company funds to set up competing businesses; the anticorruption bureau demanded cash bribes before opening investigations. Clissold's narrative is somewhat aimless, slipping from one misadventure (taking American fund managers to a condom factory) to the next, and there's a certain amount of too-easy humor derived from the exoticism of Chinese culture (e.g., the inevitable banquet where unusual body parts of rabbit and deer are served). Even in these passages, though, Clissold's fundamental respect for the Chinese culture is unmistakable, and the scenes where he leaves his office and interacts directly with the people can be quite vividly detailed. By the late '90s, millions of dollars poured into the companies yield disastrous results from an investment standpoint (and Clissold himself suffers a heart attack), but the Chinese economy as a whole hums ever more loudly. Crossover appeal of this title may be limited, but business readers are likely to be entertained.

From Booklist
In the early 1990s, British businessman Clissold--with a passing knowledge of China and of Mandarin--found himself the point man between a group of Wall Street bankers with hundreds of millions to invest and a budding entrepreneur class in China strapped for cash and foreign expertise. This seemingly perfect marriage would become, as one investor put it, "the Vietnam War of American business." By decade's end, hundreds of joint ventures would fail and billions of dollars would be lost. If Clissold was well placed to help create many of these ill-fated partnerships, he's even better positioned to explain, through his own horrific experiences, what went wrong: a labyrinthine legal and political system that Westerners (even with Chinese help) could never decipher, a rickety and hidebound system of factory management in China, an almost-willful lack of respect by Wall Street for Chinese sensibilities, and often-flagrant abuse by Chinese managers of the Western largesse made available to them. A compelling account, related with sly humor and hard-earned wisdom. Alan Moores

the author does a great job of keying in on core Chinese values
By Elizabeth R. Trescott
I have a new boss from Shanghai who has permanently relocated here. Therefore, I want to understand more about the basic Chinese mindset. While not all of vast China can fall under one cultural umbrella, the author does a great job of keying in on core Chinese values.

This book provides many "a-ha" moments. Even while it is still difficult to think the way the Chinese think, at least you know your observations are correct. And, no, you are probably not imagining things.

Most of all, I appreciated author's explanation of his experience trying to explain timelines, metrics, and results to a US Boardroom, when the Chinese do not work according to our typical project roll-out.

A compelling perspective on China
By George Fulmore
This book fills in some gaps for folks who are China watchers and who don’t know much about the early years of capitalism in modern China. It’s billed as a memoir of the author, himself. I found it a fascinating tale, full of informative insights. I’ll tell you a bit about it:
The author is Tim Clissold, who, per the book’s back cover “has been working in China for 17 years (and)…lives in Beijing with his wife and four children.” The book’s earliest copyright date seems to be 2004, which puts Clissold in China in the late ‘80s. I’m not sure that he really explains why he first went to China, but, in any case, he did some traveling there at what he calls “the tail end of the planned economy.” He goes back to London, but then back to China in 1990.

He lived in a university in Beijing for two years, learned Mandarin and much of the ways the Chinese led their lives. With a financial background, he takes a job as a Mandarin speaker with Arthur Anderson. At some point, he hooks up with a guy from Wall Street who can connect with hundreds of millions of dollars from Wall Street to invest in China. With his buddy, Clissold goes into the business of looking for Wall Street investments in China.

And this is what the book is about: the series of investments and adventures investing in and managing these factories/companies over the next decade or so. There are excruciating details of predicaments and details involved with the management of the companies. Here, we learn, first hand, of peculiarities of Chinese business “rules,” if there are any. Here, the reader can feel Clissold’s frustrations, if not his fears.

And, the author gives us insight into how most of the factories that he visited were originally set up under the Russian period of industrialization under Chairman Mao. After the Russians pulled out, the Chinese Military took over ownership and control of many of the factories. After Mao dies, the Military begins to release the factories to civilian control under the Communist government. Per Clissold, China was then like the U.S. was in the 1880s. Most of the factories were in disrepair and in need of investment capital, something that was then not available in China, domestically. Clissold also saw China at that time as uniquely like the U.S., in that it had resources and a population that could sustain its own economy. In short, Clissold saw great opportunity with investments in China.

But dealing with Chinese business people involved pain. The massive dinners with serious drinking were a burden. The country’s infrastructure was primitive. Factories had been relocated to rural areas that were hard to get to and were vulnerable to natural disasters. But by the early 90s, the Chinese economy was beginning to take off, and numerous countries had businesses clamoring to get a foothold. Competition was fierce.

Clissold’s Wall Street buddy raised the money in ways that astounded the author: “It was the wealth of the individual families in America…that really amazed me; I had no idea that such vast fortunes were controlled by families or individuals who had either made or inherited money,” he said. (This was the early 90’s, mind you.)

Clissold had visited 100 Chinese factories. His buddy had raised $200 million. The idea was to invest in multiple factories, with the goal of eventually consolidating them into a single corporate entity. That was how money was made in the U.S. Why would it not work in China, too?

With each deal, Clissold got majority ownership, but this did not mean that he would have majority control. Details of all his problems in this area abound in the book. But Clissold was essential. His Wall Street buddy did not learn Mandarin nor the details of how to deal with the Chinese in business. His buddy was the salesman. Clissold had to explain to the investors back on Wall Street what was going on at the ground floor. Clissold had to keep all the pieces of the puzzle in place.

He works for eight years, then has a heart attack and decides to quit. But he goes back in 1998. He is hooked, including with the language. But I don’t think that he really tells us the details of the overall business. He does tell us that after 10 years, he had worked himself out of a job, that the era of joint ventures was over in China. He says that billions of dollars were lost by Western investors, but he infers that he and his were winners.

I don’t think that he really wants to tell us the details of how he and his made money. It may be that his companies were at the base of the massive production of goods imported into the U.S. during the 90s. He says that the main purpose of the book is to better inform the American people of the ways of the Chinese in the hopes that we will better understand how the two countries need to interact and coexist in the future. Again, the book is more of a memoir than anything else, but it contains enough historical and personal insights to make it a good read.

A sucker is born every minute; This book documents just one more.
By Leib Gershon Mitchell
This author is just one more in the LONG LIST of people who think they are going to come to China and sell one sock to a billion people and get instantly disabused of this notion.

Honestly, how many times have we seen this situation?

1. Foreign manager comes to China.
2. He has spent NO time living in China and becoming aware of his surroundings.
3. Said foreigner has no inkling of the general level of depravity/ corruption/ pettifoggery that is Chinese people.
4. He gets ripped off in the first few business ventures and that is not enough for him. He just keeps on going--and keeps on getting ripped off.

There's a sucker born every minute, and that truism works forward in time as well as backward. This book came out in 2006 about things that had happened during the 1990s. But there have been MANY books written about people who have made the same, identical mistakes. A selected sampling, covering about 400 years (that I myself have read).

1. The China Dream: The Quest for the Last Great Untapped Market on Earth. From the time of Qing Dynasty, merchants have been trying to sell here.
2. NO ANCIENT WISDOM, NO FOLLOWERS: The Challenges of Chinese Authoritarian Capitalism This covers the 90s until today.
3. One Billion Customers The late 90s and early aughts.
4. 400 Million Customers The years between WWI and the Japanese occupation in Shanghai. Mr. Crow stayed here 25 years and never launched a SINGLE successful product.

6. Poorly Made in China: An Insider's Account of the China Production Game. A fluent Mandarin speaker completes his MBA. He advises so many people losing money that he finally decides to just write a book about it (since he gives the same advice over and over).

The author backs off from reaching the obvious conclusion (that the locals are basically a bunch of mountebanks), but if you read all of the aforementioned books, you can't escape that conclusion.

This book was purchased second hand. Because I've read SO many of these books, it's not worth more than a second hand purchase price ($0.01 + shipping).

It was about 2 afternoons worth of reading.

From School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up—This follow-up to A Thousand Pieces of You (HarperCollins, 2014) blends elements of science fiction, time travel, and romance. Eighteen-year-old Marguerite and her 20-something friend Theo travel to alternate realities including Renaissance Rome, an alternative San Francisco at war, and the futuristic "home office" of the evil Triad corporation to rescue fragments of the splintered soul of Marguerite's boyfriend, Paul. As she meets different versions of Paul, Theo, and her family, the heroine begins to question her earlier notions of destiny and of people's essential natures. The protagonist's journeys form a travelogue of sorts, and her descriptions of alternate Earth cities and the ways these settings have changed her loved ones' characters are the strongest parts of the book. The parallel worlds allow readers to wonder how different they would be if they lived in different circumstances. Explanations of the mechanics and limits of dimensional travel are skimpy and a bit forced, but that won't bother fans of the previous volume. Attractive characters, plenty of suspense and danger, and a cliff-hanger ending add to the story's appeal. The characters' age and some sexual situations make the book best suited for older teens. VERDICT Purchase where the first title is popular.—Beth Wright Redford, Richmond Elementary School Library, VT

From the Back Cover

Ten thousand worlds. Ten thousand enemies. One love.

Marguerite Caine has done the impossible, traveling to alternate dimensions with the Firebird—the brilliant invention of her parents, her boyfriend, Paul, and their friend Theo. But she has also caught the attention of enemies willing to kidnap, blackmail, and even kill to use the Firebird for themselves.

When Paul's soul is splintered into four pieces—pieces that are trapped within Pauls in other dimensions—Marguerite will do anything, and travel anywhere, to save him. But the price of his safe return is steep. If she doesn't sabotage her parents in multiple universes, Paul will be lost forever.

Unwilling to sacrifice her family, Marguerite enlists the brilliant Theo to help. The two forge a plan to save Paul and the Firebird, but succeeding means outsmarting a genius and risking not only their lives but also the lives of their counterparts in every other dimension.

Their mission takes them to the most dangerous universes yet: a war-torn San Francisco, the criminal underworld of New York City, and a glittering Paris where another Marguerite hides a shocking secret. Each leap brings Marguerite closer to saving Paul—but her journey reveals dark truths that lead her to doubt the one constant she's found between the worlds: their love for each other.

Love this series!
By Kiki Deister
I absolutely loved the first novel in this series, A Thousand Pieces of You, and this book was just as good. The story is woven throughout the multiverse as Marguerite fights to save both Paul and Theo. And like the first book, this one makes you think about life, choices, and their unforeseen ramifications.

The events of the first novel changed Marguerite, changed her perspective on life and her beliefs about it. Travelling through the multiverse and seeing the "what if's" has opened her eyes to how different choices can lead to vastly different lives. But those beliefs get tested yet again as she travels through more dimensions and finds unexpected versions of the people she loves. Those versions make her question everything.

And much like the first novel, the lines between good and evil are often blurred. Whose intentions are good, causing them to do questionable things? Whose intentions are just plain evil? It is this kind of gray area that makes this such a thought-provoking series. How far would you go to save the ones you love? How far is too far? Is there such a thing as too far? These are just some of the questions that Marguerite has to answer.

The dimensions exist during the same period of time, but it is fascinating to see the different ways in which they have evolved. To think about what that means, in terms of multiverse theory, is incredible. The Russiaverse, a throwback in time. The Home Office, a vision of the future. The New York-verse, an alternate reality. Each dimension has different versions of our characters, making them all ever more complex.

The story and its premise are, simply put, fascinating! I couldn't recommend this more!

I really liked Ten Thousand Skies Above You
By The Blonde Likes Books
Picking up where book one left off, Ten Thousand Skies Above You jumps right into action with Marguerite and Paul in another dimension. Wyatt Conley still wants to use Marguerite to do his bidding, so in order to convince her, splinters Paul’s soul and scatters them across dimensions. It’s up to Marguerite and Theo to find the pieces of her Paul’s soul and restore him. As she travels and meets many Paul in many dimensions, she questions whether she loves every version of him they way she thought she did.

I really liked Ten Thousand Skies Above You, but didn’t love it the way I loved A Thousand Pieces of You. I’ll start with the things I did like. Overall, I loved the story and the pacing. I was engaged in the story from the first paragraph, and found myself eager to find out what happened. There was a lot of action, which made the story fly by, and I felt like I finished it really quickly. I also LOVED the ending and cannot wait to see how the story concludes.

Now, for the things I didn’t love. I felt like there were a few times where I felt that things were being told to the reader but I didn’t feel it, or felt like I needed more information. For example, Paul’s soul being splintered. HOW? I need more information other than “Wyatt splintered Paul’s soul”. I had too many questions! While I liked most of the characters, I can’t say I love Paul. I mean, he’s okay I guess? But he seems so flat and boring! The entire story was spend following Theo and Marguerite, and I can’t help but want them to end up together. I liked them better than her and Paul from book one, but thought my opinion would change as the story progressed…but it hasn’t. Paul and Marguerite’s relationship is another part of the story I felt like is told to the reader without making the reader (at least THIS reader) believe it. We hear so often that Marguerite loves Paul, but WHY? There was hardly any time spent in the first book talking about their friendship or progression to more, and there was even less in this book. I don’t buy it. I don’t feel anything about their relationship, and that’s not what I want from the main pairing in the book!

All of that said, I did like the book and can't wait to see how the story ends!

Nicely done
By drebbles
Marguerite Caine is a perfect traveler - able to travel between alternate dimensions using the Firebird while being aware of her real self as well as the self of the Marguerite she is occupying in the dimension she is in. Perfect travelers are rare and powerful and Wyatt Conley will do whatever he can to get Marguerite on his side. His latest attempt involves splintering the soul of the love of Marguerite's life Paul Markov. Marguerite will attempt to save Paul's soul but to do so will hurt not only her parents but her friend Theo Beck. Still Marguerite will do what she can but the cost will be far deeper than she realizes.

I devoured “A Thousand Pieces of You”, the first book in Claudia Gray’s Firebird trilogy - I was immediately caught up in the story as Marguerite traveled from dimension to dimension - and was eager to read the sequel “Ten Thousand Skies Above You”. Truthfully, it took me a bit longer to get into this book at first as it felt a bit repetitive. However, halfway through the book - around the time Marguerite began to learn the repercussions of actions she took while in other bodies - I became hooked again and couldn’t stop reading until I got to the end of the book. Each dimension Gray has created is very interesting, at times heartbreaking, and I was left at times wanting to know what happened to the Marguerite, Paul, or Theo left behind in certain dimensions. Speaking of Marguerite, Paul, or Theo - love triangles in books can be a bit frustrating for me but I love the twist Gray puts on the love triangle as each Marguerite, Theo, and Paul are different in each dimension. There are some nice twists here and makes for some interesting thoughts about soulmates. To be sure, the travel between dimensions can be confusing at times (it is best not to think too much about it) but there are a few nifty surprises in this book. Gray ends the book on one heck of a cliffhanger and I can't wait to read the next book to see what happens to Marguerite.

“Ten Thousand Skies Above You” is another nicely done young adult novel by Claudia Gray.
