Not as good

I did like the story but it was not as good as the first two books. I didn't understand why Sandy was so stubborn and wouldn't listen to what Gavin was saying to her. She kept insisting she was the author and the characters feelings weren't important. Then all of a sudden she wanted him and was in love. What happened to lusting after his body or an unexplainable attraction that draws her to him. That didn't happen but they still ended up together despite the lack of chemistry. So many opportunities to make this an even better story that was completely overlooked and then wrapped up to abruptly. So So book, good plot but fell short.

The idea of this book is a good one, however the author is very random and seemingly pulls ideas for the story out of nowhere and it is so obvious that it impacts the flow of the story.

Gavin Blackheart is not the evil killing beast that the author has made him. He is desperate to prove himself to her before she kills him off. What can a king do but kidnap the queen, or in this case the author, and force her to see things his way. She may be stubborn but his life depends on being more stubborn.

This is the third book in this series. Sandy's friend Caitlyn finds happiness when Chris comes from another world and claims her as his wife. Sandy had hopes of snagging Chris's outer world friend Mark as her own, but he had other plans. Finally Sandy gets her story and of course just like Caitlyn she didn't quite find herself an everyday normal man.

There is a thorough discussion of the architecture, functioning, and biomechanics of bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It becomes clear how they develop forces and torques and move the body at work or sports. Overhead work, or sitting and standing still for a long time, is fatiguing: the team of authors explains why. Our bodies prefer dynamic activities to sustained static effort: we want to move about.

The book explains energy extraction from food and drink, what efforts the body is capable of, and how this depends on the cooperation of respiratory, circulatory, and metabolic systems. The effects of environmental conditions (heat, cold, humidity, air movement) and of shift work (day, evening, and night work) on task performance are discussed in practical terms. There are advantages, and some drawbacks, to "compressed work weeks" and "flextime"!

About the Author
K. H. E. Kroemer is Professor Emeritus in the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia. He has done consulting work in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Dr. Kroemer is author or co-author of about 200 publications.

H. J. Kroemer is President of the Ergonomics Research Institute, Inc., a consulting firm in Radford, Virginia. She holds a master's degree from the University of Cincinnati and has done postgraduate studies at the University of Michigan. Her special area of interest is instructional techniques.

K. E. Kroemer-Elbert, their daughter, holds an MS and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering from Cornell University with a specialization in biomechanics. She is Principal Research Engineer with one of the leading U.S. manufacturers of orthopedic devices and artificial body joints.

When, as a medical student in the 1950s, Kandel said he wanted to locate the ego and id in the brain, his mentor told him he was overreaching, that the brain had to be studied "cell by cell." After his initial dismay, Kandel took on the challenge and in 2000 was awarded a Nobel Prize for his groundbreaking research showing how memory is encoded in the brain's neuronal circuits. Kandel's journey into the brain spans five decades, beginning in the era of early research into the role of electrical currents flowing through neurons and ending in the age of genetic engineering. It took him from early studies of reflexes in the lowly squid to the founding of a bioengineering firm whose work could some day develop treatments for Alzheimer's and on to a rudimentary understanding of the cellular mechanisms underlying mental illness. Kandel's life also took him on another journey: from Vienna, which his Jewish family fled after the Anschluss, to New York City and, decades later, on visits back to Vienna, where he boldly confronted Austria's unwillingness to look at its collusion in the Final Solution. He begins with his searing childhood memories of the German annexation of Austria and his family’s escape to the U.S. when he was nine. And he ends with a conference he organized in Vienna to examine the strange reluctance of Austria (unlike Germany) to acknowledge its role in the Holocaust. A Good Read!!

This book is ten years old so it obviously cannot reflect the current state of neuroscience developments, that said however I found the book to be very informative and interesting even after having read his "Principles of Neural Science" four years ago. He covers very comprehensively all the historical milestones and major contributors to neurobiology.

A Wonderful Book

This is a wonderful book, but it is actually two books in one. It is the autobiography of a Nobel laureate and, along the way, a history of modern studies of the brain and memory. Kandel and his family escape Nazi Vienna and come to New York. He studies medicine, intending to be a psychoanalyst, but then discovers the new science of the mind—molecular biology, neuroscience and cognitive psychology. He makes brilliant strides through the in-depth study of a particular creature, Aplysia, a large sea snail. As his new life unfolds in the United States (principally at Columbia), so does the study of the brain and the two become inextricably linked.

Initially studying the humanities, Kandel is, like most wise people, broadly educated. One of the ongoing themes of In Search of Memory is the manner in which dry neuroscience anticipates and reinforces wet neuroscience. Humor theory in antiquity and the renaissance . . . the empiricism of the British philosophers . . . the Kantian ‘categories’ . . . the hypothetical, abstract constructs of Freud . . . all find some degree of confirmation in the discoveries and tentative conclusions of laboratory scientists in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The writing is very lucid and even when the story becomes increasingly complex, with the discovery of additional neurotransmitters and electro/chemical processes, non-scientific readers are able to follow the exposition and line of argument.

The book also looks to the future, with the daunting challenges of understanding consciousness and the teasing possibilities of integrating neuroscience with such fields as sociology.

Kandel is likable, engaging, and courageous, as when he presses contemporary Austrians to come to terms with their complicity in National Socialism and the holocaust. He is a cultured man, complementing his knowledge of science with his love of the arts and music. He is also a generous man, sharing the limelight with collaborators and colleagues. In some passages his autobiography constitutes an examination of the sociology, economy and ethos of those who do serious science.

If you are interested in following the life of a very interesting man as well as following the course of modern neuroscience, this would be an ideal place to start. It is also rich in its illustrations and it includes a 20+ page glossary which is very, very helpful.

Immensely readable discussion of memory following the authors personal history

I bought this book when it was first published but for some reason got distracted while reading it the first time and put it down. Luckily i recently decided to pick it up again- the book is fantastic. In search of Memory is a mixture of autobiography and science. The author constructs the book around his own history and his own motivation both for study of memory. The book is split into 6 sections with the first and last focused on personal history and the middle four focused on the author's work. All is engaging and readible and highly recommended, I will give a brief overview of the sections.

In the first section the author describes his childhood in Vienna with the Nazi invasion and the persecution he and his family faced- he describes the hardships faced and the journey taken to go to the US. In this section the stage is set to pose the questions about how memory works. In particular, how memories can be so clear so far from the date of experience in certain situations and where this permanence is formed and stored is pondered. Though few can empathize with the author's experience all can sympathize with the questions about the basis for memory.

The author works chronologically and goes through his early history working with biological and neurological questions. Practical neuroscience and biological problems are considered and so is the authors journey that took him to study the right system to consider memory. The author throughout the book makes it a point to argue that finding the right simple system to analyze that can give broader implication is at the heart of putting oneself in a position to make progress. The author settled on the sea slug Aplysia. So too are discussed were the experience of the author in first monitoring of action potentials in the squid nervous system. A creature with nerve cells relatively easy to monitor.

The author moves onto trying to monitor change in the nervous system after becoming comfortable with the Aplysia's biology. Reflex behaviour is studied and the monitoring of nerve cells is examined when presented with various stimulus. The chemical reactions that take place within the cell and the neurotransmitters that are associated are discussed and in particular the mechanics of short term memory adaptation and implication to behaviour are discussed in detail through the results of experiments done. The author continues on to pose questions about long term memory and how short term and long term though different, must be associated somehow. The mechanics for this are not understood but insight is provided by the author and the subject matter is fascinating.

The author continues in complexity and starts to discuss things like perception and spacial awareness. Spacial awareness is definitely an arena to explore how memory works given our spacial awareness and that of most creatures is a function of nature in initial architecture as well as environment which determines how the memory implicit in a mental map is formed. This process is being explored in current science and the idea of paying attention is also discussed.

The author moves on to modern biomedical progress and how understanding memory processes in mice has provided a means to develop insight and treatment into memory related diseases. The author discusses how biology is an incredibly important part for the future of psychiatry. In particular the rigour of science should be applied to psychiatry to get an objective measure of results. Interaction of people is shown to be very important for developement and treatment is not chemistry when it comes to social disorders and mental disorders like depression and schizophrenia. The author also walks through some of his thoughts on the collaboration of the private and public sector in the field of pharmaceuticals.

The author concludes with his receiving of the Nobel prize. It is a return to the autobiographical aspect of the book and the author describes how he revisited Vienna and some of the discourse engaged in while there. It is a reasonable end to an otherwise fascinating and informative book.

Fantastic Book - Exposing Missionaries and Saving Jews!

Rabbi Tovia Singer's book uses the Jewish Scriptures to provide a tool of self defense for Jews against proselytizing missionaries. These missionaries often use Tanakh to make their case, but sadly they do this with mis-translations, text out of context, and fabricated text.

Now clearly these missionaries believe what they are saying and simply do not know their arguments using the Jewish Bible are not correct.

Who Needs and Will Most Enjoy This Book:

1) Every Jewish person 14 years of age and older, regardless if they are Reform, Conservative, or Orthodox, who lives anywhere that Missionaries exist.

2) Jewish Converts from Christianity.

3) Jews who have left the faith and accepted the beliefs of missionaries. These former Jews will see their correctable mistake and if they are willing to study this and their own bible will choose to return to the faith of their ancestors.

For Jewish adults such as myself, this gives me an understanding of Judaism and of Christianity that reinforces my Jewish faith and allows me to help other Jews remain so.

Last, I must mention the easy to read writing style and format. This book is written in easy stand alone sections and you can simply open to any page and start reading - this to me is amazing and practical as I often usually only have short periods of time to read. The index is excellent and this book will be a permanent addition to my collection, both to read again and as a reference.

You will not want to loan this book out. It is a page turner and difficult to put down. I have never met the author, though I have heard him on Internet Radio (Israel National Radio) and he is amazing. This definitive text is going to be what I buy for Bat and Bar Mitzvah gifts and what I will donate to my congregations library.

Simply a fantastic book. Buy it now, you will be happy you did!

Awesome Book! More like an Encyclopedia!

Tovia, this is the best guide I have in my library! If you haven't seen his DVD's or listened to Tovia's audios then you need to have this book! You need to have this book even if you have listened to his lectures. This guide takes you by the hand and goes through scripture to show that jesus was NOT the messiah, and that the "old testament" is just as relevant today as it was 4000 years ago. I was a former Lutheran who had already left the church before reading this guide, but when I read some of the things that Martin Luther had written about the Jews in that guide, I nearly threw up. Most people just think he didn't like the Catholic church, but from things he wrote about the Jews, he was just a vile person, and it's easy to see where antisemitism comes from in the church.
Also, it is so nice to have the exact scriptures to look up that Tovia talks about in his audio's and Dvd's for reference. Tovia is one of those people that can quote you any scripture from any part of the bible, new or old testament, in English or in Hebrew, in seconds without batting an eye. I am not as lucky and I need to be able to find the scriptures that he talks about, and they are all there in the guide, so that you can then go to the bible and find the entire chapter that is being talked about. The guide is very well written, and there is an index, and you can just flip the book open and read from that point, as I said, it's more of an Encyclopedia then a book. Thank you for making this book, as I will be referring to it often during my studies.

This is a well researched book which is delightful in its coverage of so many aspects of the current Ballroom Dance World.

It is especially well written, & some incredible photographs are shared, taken by the Author himself.

It would seem to me that this topic has extended applications for gerontology, immunology, and fibromyalgia, not to mention the wonderful workout and 'joie de vivre' one enjoys , even vicariously, reading this excellent book.

Unreadable, absolute waste of time and money.

I read almost any ballroom dance book that I can find. I am a serious competitive pro/am dancer. This "book" comprises sentence after run-on sentence, words with no real meaning. Cannot imagine an editor was involved with this publication. Save your money.

For a paperback book that costs $40, it is not 'user friendly.' The author needs a ghost writer to make his tone and wording a little more conversational.
