Brian MacKenzie is a strength and conditioning coach and the creator of CrossFit Endurance. Kudos from the back of the pack

I have been running for four years and I've been doing Crossfit for about two years, and I will be the first to admit that I am totally mediocre at both. I regularly come in at the bottom 20% of all races that I run, and my attempts to become a better, faster runner have been disorganized and largely unsuccessful.

Enter CrossFit Endurance.

A friend recommended CrossFit Endurance programming to help me build speed, and he referred me to the CFE website. Even though I was familiar with CrossFit and its endless acronyms, I could not wrap my head around the CFE programming on the website. Even so, I soldiered on, doing the CFE drills that I could understand several times a week.

And I saw immediate improvement. Over the course of about five weeks I beat my 5K personal best by a full minute and a half. I didn't see that much improvement in my first FOUR YEARS of running. But I still felt like I wasn't getting everything I could out of CFE because I didn't understand the programming fully. That's where Unbreakable Runner shines. It explains the methodology of CFE, the what, why and how of the workouts, and it talks in plain terms about how to implement the program. And the best part of Unbreakable Runner, to me, are the invaluable training plans. The book covers everything from the 5K to ultra distances, laying out reasonable training plans using CFE methodology.

Critics often point to CFE's lack of the sacred "LSD," or long, slow distance run in the programming for longer races, but the book acknowledges that there's room for the long run if the runner wants to do it (and some of us do love our Saturday mornings of 20 mile solitude). So that's no reason to turn away from the book.

In all, I'm glad to have purchased the book. I just started a training plan out of the book and I'm excited to see how I progress using this methodology in the coming weeks.

and this is a good book for someone who intends to combine with crossfire ...

This is the same basic book as Power Speed Endurance by Brian Mackenzie, just shorter. The concepts discussed are correct, and this is a good book for someone who intends to combine with crossfire and has not heard of intervals before. The reason for the two stars is that there are no strength training protocols -- the authors literally tell you to join crossfire endurance and do their workouts. So the book is a good adjunct for those who have already drank the Kool-Aid. For those who were hoping for some guidance to do on their own (the reason most people buy a book such as this), the book is fairly useless.

Excellent approach to running!

This book is easy to read and loaded full of great concepts that are easy to adopt. I'll admit I've had reservations about Crossfit's application to sports in the past. Having read and adopted the core concepts of Becoming a Supple Leopard, Free+Style, and now Unbreakable Runner I can say forget what you've heard (if negative) and start reading these great books on mobility, movement, and running. My only knock against this book is that Mackenzie doesn't dive into his wealth of knowledge on breath work and cold therapy applications. (See- Wim Hof)

I have added an additional star as I spoke with the author and found that they are revising the book as errors are noted. This is apparently an advantage of using a smaller publishing company. They are able to make revisions on the fly as copies are printed. I believe the ongoing effort to make corrections and improve the quality of the text deserves another star.

Original Review:

I am using this text in college-level courses. I will cautiously recommend its use with the following considerations.

First, this book is relatively ground-breaking and I agree with a previous reviewer that Doug Elrick can legitimately be considered a pioneer in this somewhat new and emerging scientific field, especially on the academic side. The book is a first of its kind and is an outstanding effort. I truly hope it sets a standard to be imitated by other authors and mainstream publishers. I strongly recommend it for subject matter, content, and the practical problems.

On the other hand, unfortunately, the text has many typos and even a few erroneous calculations. For example, it is not uncommon to find such substitutions, as 0x45 for what should be 0x4F. I am not sure if this is the result of an automated review process or what. Most of the typos are inconsequential and it has become “fun” for the students to find them before other classmates. Such games can be very motivational. However, there are a small number of typos (errors) in example calculations that can be extremely frustrating for the students, especially when they spend hours working on problems trying to get their answers to match the examples in the book. Many of the exercise files are either missing or incorrectly labeled in comparison to the text.

Furthermore, the answers to the practical exercises provided by the publisher run about 25% outright wrong. I am not sure how or why that disconnect could have happened. My strongest recommendation for any instructor who wants to use this book is to work out each and every practical exercise yourself and compare the answers to those provided by the publisher. It will save you a lot of embarrassment in front of your students, especially when they have derived the correct answer and your answer is wrong.

As an instructor in this field, I will likely develop my own manuals and practical exercises for future use. That way, I can control content and quality. I selected this text for a quick start-up on an undeveloped course with an extremely short timeline for implementation. Other than the numerous typos in the text and errors on the answer key, the Elrick text is a great model for how such a text should be designed and organized. I sincerely hope that there will be a second edition and that it will be more thoroughly reviewed before publication.

Congratulations to Doug Elrick for a relatively successful first effort.

It's a good book.

I read the storage and file system related chapters from Windows Internals 6 before reading this book, but besides that it is my first book on the topic and I had NO prior knowledge. I went through the material 2-3 times in order to really understand and it was well worth it. What you get is a deep insight into how your data is structured on your disk from a file system perspective. Really good step by step teaching approach that gets the important stuff across in an easy to understand manner.

The editing is really bad. Countless typos, some of which you have to be creative to decipher. There are some errors in calculations of the examples as well. I sent an email to the address mentioned in the book to get the course material, but I got no response (1 week ago). You don't really need it in the end, but...just saying.

All in all, a good book if you are willing to work and dedicated to understand.

Ruhl's Quirky and Brilliant Voice At Its Best

Sarah Ruhl is emerging as an important voice in contemporary theater, and anyone who has read one of her scripts or seen a production of her work can understand why. Her voice is quirky and refreshing, and yet it doesn't become a gimmick or lose itself by being unrelatable. Cleanliness, the subject of this work, weaves its way through the lives of the characters as they struggle with family and relationships, grief, and the meaning of true love.

The two main characters, Lane and Virginia, are sisters with very different ideas about cleaning. The play opens with Lane talking about her Brazillian housekeeper, Matilde, who has given up trying to clean. Lane is infuriated; a successful doctor, she makes it clear that she did not go to medical school and work all of the hours that she has worked just to clean her own house. For her, cleaning is menial work, beneath her. Virginia on the other hand can't believe that anyone would give up cleaning their own house. How do you know progress, she asks the audience, if you don't know how quickly dust accumulates under your bed. For Virginia, cleaning is a refuge from the "dirtiness" of everyday living, of a world that isn't perfect and certainly isn't fair.

There are other characters and complex interactions, but the heart of this show is Lane's depressed housekeeper, Matilde. Determined to become a comedian and write the perfect joke, she is haunted by memories of her parents: her mother "died laughing" (because if you've heard the perfect joke, why would you continue to live?) and her father killed himself directly after. Her attempts to construct witty and ribald jokes, usually in her native tongue, are humarous; their juxtaposition with her memories of her parents and their magical love are heart-breaking. Matilde is one of the great tragic characters of contemporary theater.

Fans of magical realism will enjoy the playful use of space: actions on a balcony (imagined as another apratment) affect the characters below and disembodied words appear on the walls (translations of jokes, explanatory words, etc). Though not as spectacular as the staging of Ruhl's other great work EURYDICE (it's hard to compete with an elevator car filled with rain), the interplay between spaces helps reinforce the actions and consequences of characters and their decisions.

I would heartily recommend anything written by Ruhl, but this one is a special treat. Though not as emotionally-impactful as EURYDICE, it is a tender and often surprising meditation on love, and all of the clean and dirty emotions that it entails.

Ruhl Does Not Disappoint

I really enjoyed Clean House! Ruhl's writing is easy to follow, and I love the simplicity of her writing. Her stage directions are also great, something that Ruhl is famous for. I like the simplicity of the comedy and would definitely recommend reading this play!

I love this edition of the play, although I believe I did detect a few typos. The pages are easy to turn and the formatting makes it very easy to read. I had no idea Samuel French published plays in this style. And it's a great play! Very original and funny.

To my surprise, loved it!

I chose this book based on co-author Amie Kaufman, who is also co-author on the Starbound series, which I love. When I received the book, two things shocked me: its size and the strange format. But neither of these things should put off a potential reader.

Instead of narrative, this book is presented through transcripts of interviews describing events, email conversations, reports, graphic elements…it’s very odd. At first I found it intimidating, and wondered if I would be able to read a book in this manner, but after maybe 30 pages, you’re well into it.

Because of the format, it’s not truly like reading a 600-page book. The copy is very loose, since it mimics the format of the communication type instead of being running body text.

As for the story: Kady and Ezra have just broken up when their planet is attacked. As their ships attempt to escape from their long-term pursuers, Ezra is drafted into becoming a fighter pilot, and Kady becomes a hacker. They're trying to put together what is happening, why the artificial intelligence seems to have gone haywire, and a deadly disease is spreading among the survivors. Can two teens save them all, while getting their romance back on track?

You may be thinking, "This sounds like every sci-fi movie I've ever seen rolled together. Why should I read it in book form?" I promise, the story is really, really exciting the way it's told. Also, there are some twists and turns along the way. I went from "What IS this book?" to "Yep, get me the sequel, NOW!" once I had finished. Sequel will be an auto-buy, and can't come fast enough.

Ready for the shortest review ever?

ILLUMINAE is █████ out of this world.

That about covers it, but here’s a longer version:

ILLUMINAE is the sort of book I’ve wanted to read for a long time.

First, the format: It’s composed entirely of interviews, emails, IM convos, recovered video footage, conversations with Artificial Intelligence, and other neat stuff like ship schematics and casualty lists. I geek out over that type of stuff, because it makes me feel like I’m the book’s world. I know the non-traditional format might be off-putting for some readers, but the authors did an amazing job. That kind of format can go wrong, but here, it was *perfect.* The emails and IMs and other content really worked to develop the characters. I knew Kady and Ezra within pages, and everyone else, too. Rarely do I tear up when bad stuff happens, especially to minor characters, but here I did, because I *knew* these guys and I was rooting for them.

Second, the story: After the Kerenza colony is attacked by BeiTech, Kady and Ezra and the other thousands of survivors are in a deadly race for their lives. They have to outrun the Lincoln, a ship bent on their destruction so there aren’t any living witnesses of the atrocities at Kerenza. But they also have to survive the fleet’s AI, which has gone… a little crazy. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, there’s a new plague no one has seen before.

Third: the experience: reading ILLUMINAE really is an experience. Don’t let the length put you off. Yes, it’s over 600 pages, but it goes by quickly. I was actually trying to drag it out because I *loved* the experience of reading this book. There’s dark humor, references to classic sci-fi, great characters, moral dilemmas to puzzle over, and tons more. The formatting is well done too, which really adds to the experience. For example, I’ve never read a battle scene the way it’s shown in ILLUMINAE, and now I can’t imagine how I’ll go back to normal blocks of text. This is great YA sci-fi, folks.

ILLUMINAE is a book with a lot of hype behind it. Very rarely do hyped up books meet my expectations, but this one did. ILLUMINAE vaporized the hype monster. I need the rest of this series so badly that waiting is going to be painful… has anyone invented a jump gate generator yet?

Illuminae is a book full of firsts for me. I haven't read anything written by Jay Kristoff yet and even though I have Amie Kaufman's books, the Starbound series, I haven't had the chance to read them. So it's the first book I read from these authors. Also, I haven't read anything like this: full of files and mysterious notes that end up compiling the whole story.

I have to confess that I was absolutely terrified to start reading this book as well as excited because I haven't read a similar book before and I was worry I might end up hating the design in which was written the book. However, this was not the case. The files are all hacked files such as private conversations, security footage, etc., all classified, and they tell the story without making it tiresome or annoying. It was quite the opposite. You just keep reading more and more and end up "absorbing" all the details and when you notice what has happened you're ending the book and you're screaming a: "No, no, no. This can't be happening. I was just on the first page a few minutes ago!" So, yes, the story is that good.

It is true that due to the format in which Illuminae is presented, the characters feel a bit distant to the reader, because you are not constantly "inside their heads". However, the story progresses and keeps going just like the synopsis promise us.

There's romance, too! Kay and Ezra broke up but they know they have feelings for each other that cannot banish in a day and, more important, they know that they story is not finished. I just love it when characters are in love and they just can't help it.

To sum up a bit and not give anything away for those future Illuminae readers, Amie and Jay's story is mind-blowing, original and a must-read. With a great plot and a world that even though it might have been hard to develop it through the files, they did it wonderfully.
I think that everyone deserves to read this book and give the story a chance, because even though we are not used to this type of narrative, the story is presented in an original way and the authors created a fantastic, thrilling and brilliant story.

Life in the Scrub

South Moon Under is beautifully written with fascinating detail and plenty of suspense. Rawlings wrote this story of subsistence living in the Florida scrub country after visiting a moonshiner family for several weeks. The picture of their struggle to eke a living in this marginal land makes for great reading.

But the more important aspect of this novel is the revelation of what government laws and power mean in the every day lives of people living only a hair's breath away from starvation. We see how immoral and corrupt laws and those who enforce them destroyed the delicate balance of survival for the people of the scrub. I don't know if she intended it to be, but this is an anti government, libertarian novel and an important contribution to the historical record. Every liberty lover would gain much from reading this book.

Rawlings' first novel: profound, beautiful right to the last word.

I just finished this book. It is powerful, deeply moving, beautifully written. It immersed me completely in the world of Rawlings' characters, the simple farmers, trappers, hunters and bootleggers who lived in the Florida scrub early in the Twentieth Century, struggling against the wild to provide for themselves and their children. I did not find it as mystical or wise as "The Sojourner" or "The Yearling," perhaps because both those novels had more compelling heroes. But this story --- written before those later novels --- provides a great masterly overview of a family through three generations, and I came to care as much about these people I had about Jody of "The Yearling" or Ase, the quiet philosophical hero of "The Sojourner." There is something noble and grand about this novel. It suggests a truly great ambition on the part of the author, not simply to chronicle the harsh and beautiful world of particular people, but to extract from the tale the most profound lessons that the earth has to teach. And "South Moon Under" can be seen as a step on the way to the deeper concerns of Rawlings' later books. There is great care here, great restraint, as always, with Rawlings --- who lets her characters talk in their compelling and often savagely poetic vernacular. And the physical descriptions of the people, the trees, the animals, the river, the fires that burn the scrub, and the rains that descend on it --- are priceless. I really loved this book. It filled me to the brim with fresh images, fresh considerations, and fresh ideas. It left me with a feeling of sadness, but a kind of muted joy as well.

A Lament for the Death of Old Florida.

SOUTH MOON UNDER is a page flipper and hard to set aside. Definitely 5 Star Quality.

True, it's a tale of the demeaned and marginalized Florida Cracker, who ekes a living from the Scrub, avoiding unnecessary contact with civilization; but Rawlings' anthropology is soaked with death. Her book is a lament for the death of Old Florida.

Civilization destroys the land and the critters and the people.

A mixed bag of fruits

It's tough to rate this book. On one end, you get alot of web technologies in one package: xhtml, javascript, xml, asp.net, php, python, sql, etc, etc. On the other end, however, some sections are severely lacking. The PHP section is very short and topics such as PHP classes aren't even mentioned. The main problem with this book is that it's trying to create something that is just too ambitious. There are many commands, for every scripting language I mentioned above, that are missing. IMHO, I think the Deitels are good authors. Their C++ series is phenomenal and it really taught me how to program in C++. This book, while it does contain the great writing style of Deitels, is unfortunately incomplete in too many aspects.

If you want to learn a scripting language, then it would be a good idea to purchase a book which focuses on that language alone and not 10,000 others at once.

Great all-in-one, but too Microsoft-centric

This book overall is the best general introduction to website development technologies that I've found. I'm coming from the perspective of a professor who needed to teach HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and any server-side scripting language to my students. After deciding to use PHP, I loked for several appropriate books, and I did find numerous good options, but at the very most, any given book would only cover two of the technologies I needed. Thus, I would end up with at least three or four books that had way more than necessary and would cost up to $200 for one course.

Eventually I discovered Deitel's all-in-wonder, and found an excellent textbook that includes every possible Web technology that I might consider in one reasonably priced book. It has at least one introductory chapter on every technology. Note that everything in the book is simply introductory--very appropriate for a first-level course. It serves as a life-time reference that helps a student or Web developer enter into any given Web technology in a tutorial format. However, to get more advanced, the developer will absolutely have to find a dedicated book on the technology of interest--this book is not for advanced topics; it just gets you in the door--but productively so!

Specifically, the book has at least one full introductory chapter (sometimes two) on: XHTML, CSS, Flash, Dreamweaver, XML, ASP.NET, Perl, PHP, and Coldfusion. It has 10 full chapters on JavaScript that fully teach a non-programmer from scratch how to program (hence the title of the book)--however, I have serious disagreement with their Microsoft-centric approach, as I mention below. The book also has a chapter each on web graphics, web servers, and databases.

In addition, the book includes a CD with complete PDF chapters on VBScript, ASP (not .NET), Python, JSP, and lots more. The chapters are clear, and the authors make a good selection of the most important and useful functions and features, that give students a solid base to get on their feet web programming.

However, the book has one very serious systematic flaw: The writers only used Internet Explorer and completely ignored compatibility with other browsers. I strongly emphasize to my students programming for Web standards, and this is very difficult to do with this book--in fact, it is impossible the way they teach JavaScript. Many of their code examples simply will not work with browsers that follow W3C standards such as Firefox and Opera. I eventually had to give up on teaching students work-arounds for the book's code, and just gave in to Microsoft. Obviously, this is not an acceptable compromise for some people, so this book might be disqualified for this one reason alone. However, I find the book extremely valuable nonetheless--for this reason the book does not deserve five stars.

For my purposes, it is the best choice available, and if not for its exclusive focus on Microsoft Internet Explorer, it would be a near-perfect introductory book on every significant web technology.
