The embargo fits Einstein's definition of insanity - it has proven not to be effective, it's time to let the rhetoric go

I recently met Jay at a meeting dealing with Cuba, and was immediately impressed with his knowledge of the culture and his keen sense of how things work on the island, only to find out he had not only being doing business there for 15 years... he had co-authored a book on the topic. He was open about the fact that some chapters needed to be revised, but I found the book relatively current, meaningful - and highly informative. Things are changing so fast in the normalization of the Cuban-American "trade" relations that even if you published a book today, by July there may be a different set of rules in play... hopefully, the end of the embargo. I highly recommend this book.
As a point of reference, I was almost 10 years old when I left Cuba with my mom, dad and sister on January 6th, 1968 - the Freedom Flight generation. I adapted very quickly to my new environment. My parents were apolitical, or at least they did not dwell too much on the why we now found ourselves in Miami, they simply adopted the pragmatism of the Cuban culture and setout to make sure my sister and I had a roof over our heads, and an education. My dad was an R&D Chemist, who had worked for ESSO Standard Oil in Cuba, and an intellectual - he already was fluent in English, despite a heavy accent, while my mom was a housewife, and tended to the care of my older sister and me. At that time, the stigma of being a refugee, or "REF" as we were referred to in school was one to avoid, so I blended in, avoided the stereotype, and to some degree separated myself from the roots.
In June 2016 I did my first trip to Cuba on business, with mixed feelings. My sister recalls my dads words as we were leaving: "look back, you'll never be back" - this was true for my father and mother, both died in Miami, and never returned. I had the curiosity to see and validate the memories engraved as a 10 year-old with reality - that was an emotional roller coaster, and although I had some vivid memories (still photos), I learned that as a child, your mind amplified certain aspects, which gave me a deeper, different perspective and a better understanding on how to relate to my younger sons (I have 4, ages 5, 12, 33, and 35). So the trip piqued my interest in Cuba, now, after my second visit, I decided I want to bridge these two cultures. I read the book, as I have been doing business in Latin America for over 25 years, and for that matter around the world, and although I considered myself a citizen of the globe, I fully accepted knowing very little about the country responsible for my formative years... I consider this book is a good intro to whet my appetite, and a must read if you are unfamiliar with the culture or the history.
The Cultural aspects to me are well known, as I was raised in Cuba, and later little Havana, in a primarily Cuban family, so I found Jay's comments more relevant to me, yet Maria's comments did provide some relational insights regarding some of the Miami "old guard". One bit of data in the book I found interesting was a quote, by a Florida Congressman who touts the codifying of the embargo bill, as his greatest accomplishment, and it made me wonder... an elected official, paid by tax-payers money from the State of Florida to represent the interests of the State and its citizens... focused most of his career on a bill regarding a country outside of the jurisdiction he was elected to represent - was that the best use of "our collective" tax Dollars? Cuba matters, but a little more to some than others - relatively speaking, I've raised my boys here in the State of Florida - selfishly, Education ranks higher, despite being a Cuban-American. I can only imagine that it matter even less to a non Cuban-American, although Jay may be an exception. Look, I have inherited the same apolitical attitude as my parents, I don't know the man so I can't judge, but the effort seemed misguided and driven by personal passion. Today, with a changing demographic, where the "old guard" is no longer a majority, we need to reassess whether or not this is representative of the current citizens' view.
Jesus said He who is free of sins may cast the first stone, and no individual, or country, or religion for that matter can look back in its past and rid him or itself of some atrocities. We need to realize, after 57 plus years that Cuba is a sovereign nation. As a culture, we should know better than to think Cubans, on either side of the ocean, would yield on their believes, especially... against their will - no somos faciles - we are a PROUD people, and since birth have been taught what anyone can do, we can certainly do it better (we are told we are unlike anyone else, at least we are made to believe it) . And possibly, it is this blind pride, this characteristic that led to our current situation (on both sides). Some want a democratic Cuba, yet one of the principles of our adopted American Values is to respect others beliefs, as in freedom of speech - yet, if someone differs from our opinion, we are quick to coerce and call names, or even threaten. We need to understand the current situation, it is what it is, and leverage the commonalities that intersect transversally across the three cultures, the humane strand that bonds us as human beings.
As Americans, Cuban-Americans, let's uphold the constitution of this great nation, which took us in with open arms, and let's live by its values, as we verbally committed to do, under oath. If other countries, differ, let's respect their wishes and sovereignty to decide for themselves. Cuba and the US can benefit from normalizing its relations - we are neighbors. It's not about who is right or wrong, it's different, and we can agree to disagree, yet be "neighborly".
