I liked this book

As an adult Tamil learner, I have found Asher and Annamalai's "Colloquial Tamil" a useful part of my collection. The dialogues are useful, the CD is helpful, and the many exercises are good learning tools
The transliterated text does have some limitations, as others have pointed out. I don't think you will get far unless you make the effort to learn to read Tamil. Similarly, the discussion of Tamil grammar, which occurs in paragraphs at the end of each chapter, would be hard to follow if the book is read alone.
However, these weaknesses can be overcome when the book is read in conjunction with Hart's Tamil for Beginners and Schiffman's A Reference Grammar of Spoken Tamil (Reference Grammars). I would also recommend the University of Pennsylvania website, "Tamil Language in Context" to any adult Tamil learner.

Good CDs, must be used with book

The CDs are meant to be used alongside Asher's Colloquial Tamil Book. You can use the book alone, but there is no way that you can use the CDs alone. The CD recordings play the conversations in the book, but won't translate for you. You should have the text in front of you as you read along.
The exercises and recordings of exercises do not always match up one-to-one. This is not a big problem, but it is why I brought the score down to a 4 star.
I am told that the pace is more or less accurate for a Tamil conversation, and it is very fast, hard for a beginner to understand. You will want to pause and replay over and over again.
Overall, I think the CDs are a good bonus to making the Asher book very useful. I purchased the book new and the CDs used to save a little money.

Good learning book

Really a good book to learn this complicated language. Also good that there is the CD, but it is too professional - beginners have problems to follow these quickly spoken texts.
