Using his experiences from working in the comic book industry, movie studios and teaching, Marcos introduces the reader to a step-by-step system that will create the most successful storyboards and graphics for the best visual communication.
After a brief discussion on narrative art, Marcos introduces us to drawing and composing a single image, to composing steady shots to drawing to compose for continuity between all the shots. These lessons are then applied to three diverse story lines - a train accident, a cowboy tale and bikers approaching a mysterious house.
In addition to setting up the shots, he also explains and illustrates visual character development, emotive stances and expressions along with development of the environmental setting to fully develop the visual narrative.

Review
“With Framed Ink, Marcos Mateu distills his twenty-plus year career in feature animation into a clear, practical manual on the language of images. Marcos has a special eye for composition, lighting, and continuity that creates a tangible sense of mood and drama in all of his work.”
- Jeffrey Katzenberg, Co-founder and CEO DreamWorks Animation SKG
“There are some people who draw in a way that looks like they load their pens with pure liquified fun. Concept artist Marcos Mateu has a wonderful character of line and a jaunty, casual style that makes it look like the lines danced out and created the image of their own accord. His loose, relaxed application of color, which careens between brilliant lights and rich, atmospheric darks, just adds to the visual treat. Mateu’s drawings have just the right touch of exaggeration to give them extra visual appeal; lines are given an extra spring, forms bent out just a bit, and figures swirled into motion in a way that gives everything a sense of verve and life.” - Charley Parker

Better Than I Expected
By Manassa Trinidad La Coa
It took about a month for this book to arrive, but it was well worth the wait. When I flipped through the pages, I was somewhat impressed with the artwork, but not very. A second flip-through (double-take) proved that the book was mostly made up of inking and not a whole lot of text. I began to worry if I'd been duped and wasted my money. What could I possibly learn from a bunch of black and white images with a paragraph or two thrown in? It reminded me of some the art books my university lists as required reading that cost an arm and really don't deliver. I could've gotten more artistic education out of a graphic novel.
However, I finally found the time to sit and actually read it. It is an amazing book. Upon attentive study I realized the inkings weren't somewhat impressive they were incredible. It seems that the author, Mateu--Mestre, has a very minimalist approach to both art and instruction; yet, both his art and his lessons are immensely informative. The lessons are short and oh-so sweet. I learned new things just reading the first few pages because Mateu-Mestre isn't just trying to convey an academic sense of storytelling, but the very spirit of it. And I can tell you that is one of the major issues I have been tackling with my artwork i.e. breathing life into it, creating mood and emotion.
Mateu-Mastre's book is a very good complement to two other books I bought, both by James Gurney - who does take a more academic approach to instruction and whose art is detailed and vibrant. I wish I would've come across these guys when I first began art college.
Marcos Mateu-Mestre has created an excellent learning tool here, especially if you are a novice or mid-level artist. I so highly recommend this book that I would go as far as to say that it is a must have in any artist's library who is interested in narrative art e.g. comics, graphic novels, storyboarding, illustration, concept art, etc...
I also recommend James Gurney's Color and Light.

Great how-to book
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:moXWRJRJGZ75SG]]There are probably no other books around that covers composition with emphasis on storytelling as well as Framed Ink. This is a whole book devoted to the subject, as compared to other books (on storyboards) that usually have only one or two chapters.
Although the illustrated examples are mainly movie composition, the techniques can be applied to animation, movies and even graphic novels. Every technique comes with a concise breakdown. You get to understand how and why shots are framed in a certain way, or how to create compositions to create a certain mood. There are also tips on lighting and continuity.
Over 200 beautifully illustrated examples are included. And they are really good examples. Just by looking at the examples alone, without even reading the commentary, you already get a good idea of what's happening.
Marcos Mateu-Mestre has distilled his 20 years of experience and knowledge into an accessible package you shouldn't miss out on.
This is the essential how-to book for storytellers, or for anyone who needs to put images on screen or on paper.
Highly recommended.

Thoughts from a graduate student, human geographer, and Latino Veteran of U.S. Army
By Rafa
Reading Marcos's book, Framed Ink (2010), in the fall semester of 2011 re-kindled some old passions, when I was taking some graduate courses in the college of Design at NCSU, as well as some classes in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This is the future for those interested in environmental design and landscape architecture and GIS and other social sciences, as well as those interested in deconstructing superheroes to acknowledge the need for human geographers to understand visual storytelling is an artistic endeavor. Without question, this graphic and literary masterpiece serves its purpose of drawing pictures to raise the consciousness of art as "an investigative approach" to study life, evident in his "Last Thoughts" when Mr. Mateu-Mestre states: "Creating art will force us to make that extra effort to rationalize the things that are deepest in our mind (p. 119)." You should know that every chapter of Framed Ink (Mateu-Mestre, 2010) offers some foresight, hindsight, and insight into the world of animation, graphic novels, and movies by sharing universal principles associated with art, from the strategy of studying the atmosphere to the tactics, techniques, and procedures associated with chiaroscuro and designing shots with a sense of purpose.
