A Portal to the Art of Living

Many readers look to works in the lifestyle design, location independence, and online marketing genres for hints, if not outright blueprints, for creating a life (or livelihood) unlike the ones they're living now. I have read my share of blogs, articles, and books looking for a "better" way, but I have encountered resistance. Often, it took the form of a thought along these lines: "What worked for him or her, just won't work for me. That's not me." And, I would look for the next "answer."
In Beyond Rules, Fabian Kruse offers no answers, checklists, or blueprints. He offers something more valuable: A portal to awareness. It begins with awareness of the rules, mostly external, that many have internalized and accepted as their own. Gradually, we begin to realize that the answers we seek come from within. Fabian does offer questions, but it is our job to answer them, that is, if we choose to ask questions of ourselves first.
Beyond Rules does not offer the "easy" answers that many seek. What it does offer is an experience; so, allow yourself to notice and feel what forms in your mind as you read. Beyond Rules is constructed with sufficient flexibility to allow us to explore our own lives. Too little detail and it ends up a generic and ambiguous "do better" pamphlet. Too much detail and it becomes just about Fabian Kruse and that closes off the opportunity to connect with our own questions. Fabian has treaded the middle path that elevates Beyond Rules to a work of art, as Seth Godin might say.
Henry David Thoreau wrote "I did not wish to live what was not life..." in Walden. Over a century and half later, Fabian Kruse contributes to this tradition of introspection and action. Just as Thoreau organized his thoughts, feelings, and experiences from his 2+ years in the woodlands on the edge of Concord, MA, along several themes, I hope Fabian shares his explorations in the world in future works.

If You're Looking For The Philosophy Of Being True To Yourself...

Fabian does an excellent job of laying the groundwork for someone to discover their true sense of purpose with "Beyond Rules." I read the PDF version (before this book was published on Amazon), and then bought the Kindle version, because it was that good.
This guide doesn't go beyond the basics of discovering your true sense of purpose, and I wish it was longer, hence 4 stars instead of 5.
I can recommend this book, plus recommend you visit the author's blog for lengthy articles centered around the same type of topic (The Friendly Anarchist).

For an autherntic life - start here.

I don't think we can ever have too many reminders to regularly challenge the rules, traditions and routines under which we live our lives. To really live a satisfying, fulfilled and authentic life I believe requires us to live true to ourselves. We cant do this if we are mindlessly following everybody elses' rules and expectations. And so enter Fabian's great little philosophy (not rule) book.
If your looking for the answer to every question on living, this isn't it. But it's a great place to start what I call "deconstucting" your life ie intentionally examining everything we do and why we do it. The brilliance in this book is it's simplicity. There's no heavy research to digest or pages of exercises to complete before you move onto the next section. This is easy to read, easy to apply and a lot of laughs along the way. Fabian has a way of making you feel like your simply sitting down having a chat with him over coffee.
Even though Fabian's blog is called the Friendly Anarchist (another great read), he is not advocating living outside of rules and laws. But rather adopt the rules that will work for you, take control. Thanks Fabian. And now I'm off to get some ice cream (beyond the rules of my diet)!
