Finally, something written that truly makes a marriage work. . .

I'm not one to read a lot of self help books on relationships or marriage, but I've read a few. They didn't help. I don't trust the psychiatric profession. I saw how they wasted a hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars trying to "fix" my ex-wife and me. Yet, before I even finished reading the book, I started using methods taught in the book that worked over and over again. This book doesn't use tricks. It gives me an understanding of how to make a marriage work. I think it should be mandatory reading for every high schooler in America. I wouldn't change anything about my circumstances as I am today very happily married. But if I had read this book 30 years ago, even my first marriage to a extremely negative person, where my children were affected, would have been significantly more peaceful - one where all of us would not have had to go through the difficulty that we did.
In my opinion the information in this book would make a horrible marriage tolerable, a difficult marriage good, and a good marriage great. This is a magical book that should be read by every person who plans on having a relationship at some point in their life or is in one now.

The Get Yourself Right when you're Married Book

This isn't a let's find that romance that we once lost book. It isn't a book that will make you want to stair lovingly into your partners eyes as you turn the pages. This book wont make you want to go out and buy your partner a sweet gift to profess your love once more. This book is a tell-it-like-it in marriage manual. It kind of reminds me of the Five Languages of love, except not nearly as complicated (and the five languages isn't even that complicated, so that should tell you something). The Marriage Foundation is easily understood, easy to navigate to, and straight to the point. There's a good white page radius around the material so that you can jot down notes while reading, which you will have many at certain points of your exploration. The verbiage is simple, but has impaction. If you are looking for something beautifully written, you wont find it here, but you will find material that helps you to better understand the meaning of Marriage. Paul stresses that most people go into marriage knowing very little about their partner and that most take more time and do more research in purchasing a car than they do in choosing their life long partner. Well, if you, as many, decided to take the plunge because of your incorrect rose colored glasses, assuming that marriage is like a walk in the park and now your glasses are off and everything is just plain ugly, this is a good book to pick up...a good "foundation" to begin picking up the missing pieces that you never thought to put together before you were married.
Another thing I want to mention, is that this book is for everyone. Whether you are single or married. There are a ton of sections that you can apply to your life, whether in a relationship or not. In fact, I'm single and found myself loving the chapter on Controlling the Mind. I never thought to view myself the way Paul explains it, but now that I am, I've already seen a noticeable change in negative habits.
The only reason I knock off a star is because Paul does not focus on God. Paul claims to not support any "Religion or Dogma", but you can tell that he has a relationship with God (or so it appears) in his book. I love that he states sex before marriage is detrimental and doesn't necessarily focus on the moral aspect of it, but the biological reasons as to why we should wait until marriage. If you are a Christian, I do believe this book can still be helpful if you look at it from Gods perspective.

Easily the best book I've ever read on saving your marriage, and actually one of the best self-help books I have ever read -- on ANY subject. Breaking The Cycle is well-written, with thoughts expressed in a fresh, cogent, sensible manner. If you truly desire to be the change you want to see in your marriage (and in the world), this book gives you a practical course of action that you can actually follow. If you sincerely apply the principles within it, you will evolve into a better, happier human being, as well as a more loving spouse. It's a real win=win. What you read in Breaking The Cycle will stay with you for a long time after you've closed the actual covers. It has managed to explain many complex reasons for my own behaviour, as well as that of my spouse, and with self-knowledge and self-awareness comes tremendous power to change. I am hoping that what I've learned will help save my own marriage... this book has certainly given me the encouragement I need to keep my positive focus on marital restoration and reconciliation. Worth every penny!
